military rates for flights?

Hey everyone,

H is AD Army and we're stationed in Germany. I'd like to go to the States in May/June and have been investigating the best (and cheapest) way to get there. He'll already be Stateside for a TDY and then will use his summer leave to meet me afterward. So any advice? I could Space A but Ramstein is a little far from us. I've heard some airlines give military discounts-anyone have any experience with it?

Thanks!

Re: military rates for flights?

  • H and I are Delta frequent flyers and we usually use their military rates. All you have to do is call Delta and ask for the military desk. We have saved so much money on flights to/from Japan by using them especiallly on last minute flights. There was one time H saved almost half of what the regular ticket was.

It's similar with AA - call them up and ask for military rates.  (I'm a FF with AA, so they are who I am most familiar with.)

I have used their military rates, but they are somewhat limited, and (domestically) not that great a deal.  Overseas might be a different story, I'm not sure.  However, the big benefit with the military fares is that they have no change fees associated with them (or, rather, they didn't the last time I used one).  So, if plans change, you can modify your flights without paying a penalty - you only pay the differential between the air tickets.

  • I had no idea they gave military rates.

  • Quite often, you can get a better rate on the discount travel sites like Travelocity or Expedia.  I've even seen the military "discount" be higher than the rate listed on the airline's website.  It pays to shop around.

There's a reason for this.  Sometimes the fares are for refundable/changeable tickets (which are pricey), sometimes they're not, just like the travelocity and expedia type fares.  It all depends on inventory.

I always call and ask.  I'd say about half the time I book a mil rate, the other half I do better online.
