Tell me about your Clothes Washer and Dryer....
What do you like and dislike about it? H and I signed a lease for a townhome where we have to supply our own W/D. I know they are not included on base so give me your reviews.
What should we be looking for?
H would like front loaders because he thinks they are most energy efficient. Is this true?
This weekend I am going to start my search with local appliance stores but I'd like to get an idea of features before I go in. My usual review site doesn't have anything for washer/dryer reviews.

We have Kenmore HE front loaders. We got the front loaders, because with how much we might have to move we know we'll be able to stack them if need be.
I wish we would have gotten the drawer things they can sit on because I hate bending over. I also wish I would have made sure I got the largest capacity available for the washer because of our king comforter and dog blankets.
If I had to go back and buy again I'd get LG front loaders. Within the first year of having our Kenmore I had to call the repair man out because our washer would just shut off. This tiny piece cost 250 on top of the 100 service charge (and dealing with Sears customer service was horrendous). We didn't buy a warranty and it's not so much the fact that we had to pay, it's the fact that within the first year we had to get it fixed.
We bought a Samsung front-loader and dryer before our last move. I love them. We got a really good deal on 'last year's model' plus one of those '% off of appliances $399 or more' type of sales and a military discount on top of that. Once you know what you want, keep looking for sales- one will come along sooner or later.
Big features for me were:
Front-loader- for low water usage, higher capacity and less drying time
Stainless steel drum in the washer since others can chip and rust
Moisture sensor in the dryer for energy conservation
I have an LG front loader washer and dryer. Its not the basic basic one but its not the top of the line one either. I love it. MIL has the upgraded one and other than having a sanitize and steam feature they aren't any different.
If you get a front loader make sure you get the stands. My FIL insisted that a pregnant me would not be able to bend far enough over to get the laundry out so he bought them for me. My cousin spent the last 4 months of her pregnancy doing laundry sitting in a chair because they didn't have the stands and she couldn't bend that far. Not fun.
ETA: What I like: it only uses just as much water as the load needs. Its nice to not have to worry about it wasting water. The dryer has the option of timed dry or "sensor dry" I love sensor dry because once the clothes are dry the dryer shuts off. I also have "speed" cycles on my washer and dryer and they are great for things like having to wash a top that you just have to wear now and having it done in about 40 minutes, that's washed and dried.
We have a standard washer and dryer, which H tells me we aren't getting new ones til they break. So I always threaten that I'm going to wash rocks in there to break them sooner because I want fun colored front loads.
Clearly that was no help to you, but I more just wanted to know if this is the place you had text me about or if you picked a different one.
Yes, they are more energy efficient and they use less water than top loaders.
We switched to front loaders and I absolutely love how much laundry I can do at one time. And, being able to wash comforters is awesome. We got a top of the line one with the steamer but because of the set up in our rental home we don't have the water line hooked up. We will when we move to our forever home though I'm certain.
We have the Whirlpool Duet white combo. And, definitely make sure you buy the pedestals!
We have a top loader washer and a front load dryer that I bought in 2001. They're GE, relatively basic (not the absolute cheapest set, but not much above it). They've dealt with the moves very well, and we have yet to live in a place where we needed stacking ones. At this point, they're over 10 years old, still going strong. I don't know anyone who has had a front loader last as long (doesn't mean they can't, but I haven't yet come across someone who says their's has).
I _much_ prefer top loader washers. I use my washing machine for dyeing fabric and felting wool, and while those things can be done in a front loader, it's a pain in the ass, and it is way easier to use a top loader for these things. We have also had to swap the door sides on the dryer a handful of times because the new place has the washer/dryer on opposite sides to the previous home. From what I have seen, swapping the door sides (so they open to the left instead of the right, or vice versa) is difficult or impossible with front loaders.
There are now HE top-load washers that have low/no agitator, so they can fit a whole lot of stuff into them. Eventually, when we replace this set, that is the type we will look for.

However, I just sold my standard Roper washer and dryer and they were fine, got the job done. I upgraded because I got a good deal on them and washing cloth diapers for two babies is going to use a ton of water. For just two people, the standard washer and dryer were totally fine.
Awesome, thanks for all the help ladies! One of my coworkers' daughter works at Lowes and is keeping an eye out for scratches/dent/overstock/last year models for us. (They also offer a 10% Military Discount) We don't want to spend more than $800 so I know we wont be able to get brand new, top model but I am fine with that.
My Mom has front loaders and I like them a lot, although we do have to clean them out more because the soap clogs the dish and door. (No biggie for me) The problem I can see with front loads is I don't know if they will fit in the room. It's a walk through off the garage. It seems wide enough but I don't know if I'll be able to unload and load at the same time. We measured the room so when I look in person I can measure the units to make sure.
We plan to start TTC this winter/end of the year so I'll be considering a huge belly in the mix of top loader (if I'll even be able to reach down to get the stuff) and height. I'm hoping the stands/drawers are not a lot to add because I would love the extra storage space.

Well.... I don't remember the one I texted you about. haha. I found what would be my dream home, but the silly lease people wouldn't call me back for over a week. This one we found on AHRN and Craigslist and was only available because the current tenant lost his gov't contract on base. The one we got is a 4 bedroom 2 bathroom town home (built this year) with a narrow fenced in back yard. It's by a semi-busy intersection but the townhomes are on a small cal-du-sac with no outlet which keeps it really quiet.
The only con is my Mother has decided she is going to furnish a room for herself for when she visits. She doesn't know the address yet so we're safe for now LMAO.
