Favorite Yarn/Fabric stores in NYC

I'll be in NYC for an afternoon this weekend and am planning out my stops. I'd love to include a yarn store or two in there and would love first hand experiences for your favorite stops in the city!

Currently at the top of my list are: Purl Soho and Brooklyn General Store. Purl's pretty close to where I'll need to be, so I'd prefer a place that's in that general area, but don't mind trekking a bit for a great stop. I'm wondering if Purl will have as much of a yarn selection as I'm hoping.

As a background: I mostly crochet, but have been dabbling in knitting lately. I also like simple sewing projects (mostly basic clothes or blankets for my girls and baby boy on the way!), but I'm pretty picky about organic fabrics and yarns and often have a hard time finding them where I live (maybe they're hiding around here somewhere?--they have to be!) ... I've also been dreaming about wooden crochet hooks for a while so if you happen to know of a place with those, please advice. Thanks in advance! :)

Re: Favorite Yarn/Fabric stores in NYC

  • I've been into Purl a few times.  They do have a nice selection of yarn and I like window shopping in the store (I'm more into quilting now).  I haven't been in Brooklyn General though my brother goes there sometimes.

There is also the Lion Brand Yarn studio.  I walked all the way down there one Friday afternoon to discover they closed at 5.  They are also closed Saturdays, but open Sunday.  There was a Subway stop nearby but I was being cheap since it wasn't "that" far from Purl.  I'd take the subway though now.  It was a good 15-20 minute walk (to find it close, then walk back).

Also check out the stores link here, there are other city ones: http://nycyarncrawl.com/
