what do yall do for your hands? I seem to have gotten down the whole process of applying tanner to my knees, ankles and feet without dark orange spots (apply regular lotion first is my method) but I have not mastered applying to my hands/lower arms without sharp lines at the wrists from washing my hands. so far the only method I've tried that has somewhat worked is applying the self-tanner to a cotton ball then applying to the backs of my hands but I feel like my hands don't get dark enough, and my fingers not at all. my hands don't tan well naturally, so even in the summer they are the lightest parts of my body not covered by a bathing suit.

Re: s/o self-tanners
That's a tough one! The same thing happens to me with the wrists:( In the summer, I tan pretty quickly so it doesn't show as much, but I think what you're doing with the cotton ball is pretty smart! Maybe the ST is not sticking to hands/fingers because you're washing hands too soon after? I don't know, I'm not much help..sorry
I use an aerosol self-tanner and don't rub it around, so it doesn't get on my palms. Then I just spray the back of my hands.
I guess if you prefer a self-tanner that requires smearing around, you could wash your hands and then spray with an aerosol.

St. Tropez is my favorite but it's pretty expensive. I buy L'Oreal Sublime Bronze when I don't feel like spending the $ on St. Tropez. I've also tried the Neutrogena one but the color was a little too yellow for me.

So this is totally over the top but I'll tell you what I do because I have had the exact same problem. I'm typically too lazy to do the whole routine but when I do, here's the skinny. I use St Tropez gradual tanner on my body and I have a smaller bottle of Zen-Tan that I use on my face. The color of both brands is such a nice brown instead orange but that's not what you were asking about.
Anyway, after my normal routine for face and body, I wash my hands well, then I take a very small amount of my face tanner, about the size of a pea and mix that with regular lotion about the size of a blackberry. Then I rub that into the backs of my hands and wrists. I wash my palms and be sure to use a nail brush just on my nails then I dry my palms and with the slightly damp part of the hand towel I go inbetween my fingers and once over my knuckles.
I know it sounds crazy and maybe a little over the top but it works PERFECTLY and I never end up with dark knuckles or dark lines in between fingers or yucky cuticles and my hands are nearly as tanned as my arms which looks really natural. Hope that helps!!!
I use the same sunless tanner and have the EXACT same problem-- it looks great everywhere else except my inner wrists...I can sometimes get it to look pretty even if after I wash my hands and dry everything I dab a small amount on the back of my hand and then use the back of my hand to kind of rub it on the inner wrist of the other hand if that makes sense. I then rub my wrists together like you would if you just put perfume on your wrists. I then put a tiny bit more on the back of my hand and rub the backs of my hands together to get a little color on my fingers (which I feel like you only need a little color since like you said, in real life your fingers dont get over the top tan usually).
This doesnt work great everytime and I might try a combo of your cotton ball trick with the lotion mix that pp said she does.
