Yay or nay: men in sandals?

This was recently discussed by a lot of my friends on FB. Do you think it's appropriate for men to wear sandals around town?

Re: Yay or nay: men in sandals?

  • Not those sandals. Or those plastic sandals with the one wide strap over the foot and the nubbys on the foot bed.

Why would he wear sandals with dress pants like that?!

Rainbows, etc. yeah, those are fine.

  • I don't mind flip flops:

but sandals are a definite no for me. All styles...

  • With casual outfits yes, but not for work which is what the above looks like.

My H has worn dressy leather flip flops with khakis and a pair of linen slacks to beach weddings and that looked perfectly fine, but in the city with work pants it just looks so off.

I despise all the sandal types PP posted above, but the Adidas ones don't really  bug me if they're going to the gym or to play a sport that requires them to wear cleats or certain shoes. I see many guys wear those carrying sports bags to kickball or baseball and then they change shoes to play. I'm totally fine with that.

  • I have seen a couple of men's sandals that I actually liked, but I dislike most men's sandals. Flip flops are fine.
  • DH practically lives in his Chacos all summer. My dad probably has a few nice leather pairs similar to the ones in the photo. He lives in Miami most of the year.

I don't see the big deal about sandals, as long as they're not in the work place.

  • I don't mind the flip flops or the closed toe fisherman style sandals but the rest are NMS.
  • flip flops or Chacos are fine with me as long as the situation and style of dress calls for it. dress pants? never. shorts with flip flops, yes and I wish my H would wear his more often. Chacos when doing something outdoorsy or sporty? yep.

however, I do think it is a cultural thing. some cultures only wear sandals and it is acceptable to wear them everywhere.

  • I am surprised to see people say Chacos are OK. Yikes. If you need an outdoorsy sandal, I'd rather seen Keens.

You know, I can so see sandals and dressier outfits pulled off in Miami for men. I may have to alter my vote.

I had to look those up. Embarrassed yea, those are acceptable too, in their proper context. I actually have a pair of shoes similar to Keens from Academy that I got for hiking in warm weather.

Yes. It's okay for men to wear sandals.

Whether they know how to put an outfit together is another question.

LOL, I had to look up Chacos. I think I refer to that style as Tevas.

  • Flip flops only. DH has Rainbows and Reefs. I'm sure in some areas those Chacos (which I had to look up too) are fine, but they do NOT work for me at all.
  • Sandals on men are fine. As long as they have clean/decent feet.

I don't get the hate of the sneaker sandals (like Keens and Chacos)..I am currently wearing my Merrell's to work. It is jean day and my toes are covered and I am comfortable. Then again I have been having some foot problems.

  • Omg, No, not those! And what is he wearing them with...a business suit?! I'm cool with men wearing flip flops and that's about it.
  • Yay!  I like some leather styles, such as leather flipflops, but also my brother & dad always wear a certain leather sandal style and it looks good. I think they are prada or something like that!
  • DH has a pair of the Addidas ones shown above. He only wears them on the boat/beach/pool.

I think it's a cultural thing. It's common to see Indian men doing this in my community. They wear sandals with EVERYTHING.

Maybe because all those sandals are fug.

I like the sandals in the OP, but not with pants as dressy as those.

  • Yay! I like "mandals". I think men can carry the look if it works with their style.
  • I think the only sandals my H owns are Rainbow flip-flops. Otherwise he typically wears boat shoes in the summer.

I do not like the sandals in the OP.
