State NCLB testing

Maybe I'm wrong, but I suspect kids would perform better on the state tests if they weren't made to be so anxious about them.

Yesterday my son's school had a pep rally for the state tests and this morning there were teachers with pom-poms cheering them as they entered school.

Re: State NCLB testing

  • Tuesday, I saw a student crying because he was so anxious about the test. The principal was awesome because she gave him the biggest hug, held his face up and said "You can do this. You've worked hard all year. You are going to be just fine." Bless his little heart. The next day I asked the principal how he did afterward. She said he came back to her and said the test wasn't as bad as he thought and he felt he did pretty well.

The other issue leading to the high anxiety is that now the TCAP scores will count 15% of the students' grade.

  • I realize the tests are high stakes for the administrators/teachers and some of the anxiousness is going to be apparent even if they try to mask it and kids will sense it, however, I just feel that the kids would be more relaxed and performed better if they didn't have weeks to get anxious about a test.

Just let them come to school like it is a regular day and give them the test without a lot of pomp and circumstance surrounding it.

Just thinking about the pom poms and pep rally make me anxious for the kids and we had a small tornado hit one of the subdivisions that feeds to our school last night which means they probably didn't get a good nights' rest making matters worse
