Like I'm 5 - Bail

On the local news this morning there was a story about how the Martin family wants George Zimmerman's bail revoked because it was so low - $150,000. Apparently his web site earned him a whopping $200,000 in donations for his defense fund and this was unknown at the time of his bail hearing.

So, like I'm five - why is $150,000 too low?

Re: Like I'm 5 - Bail

  • Unless he was given a cash bond he probably only had to post 10%.  $15k on a murder rap is chump change.

I don't know what kind of a  bond he was given

  • why do they only have to pay 10%?

  • Most bail works on a 10% exchange held by a bondsman unless the court specifies that it must all be paid in cash.  Most murder charges have a larger bond/bail to meet.  If he only had to meet the 10% he was given a real generous bail...

  • wikipedia wasn't much help either. I guess I just don't completely understand bail. So by paying a sum of money people are saying they will appear in court at appointed times, etc. If they do not, they lose the money and a warrent is issued for arrest. Do they get the money back if they do appear? Hence the bail bond person gets the money they paid out back. What's it is for the bail bond person / entity - do they charge interest or something?

ETA: Wikipedia says the bail bond person charges 10 - 15% fee.

  • It's my understanding that $150k is pretty normal for 2nd degree murder charges in the state of FL.
  • I get the symbolism of the bail amount, but does anyone really think he's not going to show up in court?
