Has anyone gotten hives from craft stuff?

I was working on a project a couple of nights ago using Mod Podge, styrofoam balls and Waverly 100% acrylic yarn and the next day had an awful case of hives.  (Thank goodness for Benadryl and Hydrocortisone cream)

These 3 items, and my trip to Joann's, were the only "new" things I came into contact with in any significance. Went to work like usual, drove in my own car, ate foods/recipes I had had before, i.e., no new packages of stuff, knew the exact ingredients, etc.

Has this happened to anyone before?

It is just so odd, and miserable. I haven't had a case of hives since college and that was after taking a medication I ended up being allergic to.

Re: Has anyone gotten hives from craft stuff?

  • No, but sometimes I'll get them because of exposure to something outside if a pollen count is high or I brush against something, then won't realize that I have them until later on.  Is it possible this happened to you?

  • No hives, but I did have an allergic reaction (runny nose, sneezing, watering/swelling eyes) from quilt batting once.

  • Immune reactions are so odd sometimes- and hives are definitely weird. My son's had them several times, and we have no idea why- no common link, nothing new, no obvious illness. Sometimes it's just your body's reaction to a virus (that you may not even know is affecting you due to it being asymptomatic). Sometimes something familiar can cause hives once or twice, and never again. It's a good idea to note anything that you suspect, for sure- if you can find a link, yay! I hope you feel less itchy soon.
  • OMG, Yes! They treat fabric with some crazy chemicals. Polar fleece is the worst for me. I get all weezy and break out in hives every time I touch that stuff. Yuck.

  • OK, glad to know that it isn't just me.

And the more I think about it, I am pretty sure it is the yarn since I have used Mod Podge before and have touched styrofoam before.

Turns out, in a brillant move (insert sarcasm font), I put the same slippers I was crating in (and getting yarn fibers on) back on my feet last night. This morning, I woke up with crazy itchy feet.
