A Poll: Can you change your own tire?

I had a flat this morning and I changed the tire myself. The girls in my office were very impressed by this. I personally think that this is a skill that EVERYONE who drives a car should master because you never know when you might get stranded.

[Poll]

Re: A Poll: Can you change your own tire?

  • yes/SS for me.  I know how to do it, but I haven't had to in a LONG time.  I'm hoping I'd remember/be able to do it.  And I've never had to do it on my Jeep (although I can't imagine really is that different).

    So yes-ish.

  • I think you could probably still do it, nooner. It's pretty much the same for all cars, just bigger tires on some. I used to have a little Ford Escort and those were super easy because the tires were itty bitty. The tires on my Malibu are larger so it definitely requires more muscle, but it's essentially the same process.

See, that's the only reason I'm hesitant -  I've only changed tires on my Neon and Sunfire!  Scott sooped up my Jeep with much bigger tires that the Sunfire, lol! jacking up an SUV I'm sure is a little different, but if I were thrown in the situation, I'm sure I could figure it out.  Although now that I think about it, I have no clue how to get the spare off the back of my Jeep.  I'm used to just getting it out of the trunk.  I should ask Scott about that when I get home tonight....

  • Yes I can.... But only in good weather.  If it is raining, snowing, or if I'm dressed nice, I will totally play stupid.  Once, I pulled into a fire department and asked them to change my tire because it was pouring and I just go my hair cut!  I got a dinner and date out of it too.  Embarrassed  The guy was HOT!

Anyways, that sort of thing would be frowned upon now by my husband.  So AAA it is.

  • If I didn't know how to change a tire, I don't think Jamie would have married me...

I also know how to change my own oil. Not saying that I actually need to do either of these things, a bonus of having a mechanic for a husband.

(I almost typed 'mechanic husband', but changed it because I didn't want it to sound like I was married to a robot.)

I think if you take the cover off, most likely the tire is just attached to the back of the jeep with lugnuts. So you'd just take it off like you would if you were removing it from the axle. I may be wrong, though!

That's kind of what I'm assuming too, but should probably make sure.  B/c I'd REALLY feel like an idiot if I got a flat and couldn't even figure out how to get the spare off!

  • I can.  I had to be able to change a tire in order for my mom to take me to get my license.

  • My dad wouldn't let me get my license until I knew how to change a tire- thank the Lord since I got a flat the first day I got my license.

I can change my oil- but I choose not to - our dealer does a great job, with the synthetic oil my car requires and only charges 30 bucks- to buy supplies it is close to 25 so its not worth the savings for me.

This.  They made me change the tire on our minivan before I could go take my drivers test.  If I could jack up a mini van at 16 I'm pretty sure I can handle my corolla  now lol.

  • Like others, I can change my tire, oil, and filter but typically I choose not to and/or I don't have to because thats what I have a husband for.

There are a lot of things in my life that I think of as "man jobs" and this is one of them.

  • SS- Because I know HOW to change my own tire, but my Carpal Tunnel Syndrome makes it so that I can no longer get the tire off to change it!
