anyone take young child to the Caribbean?

how did they like it? we usually go to disney for our family vaca but we are thinking of taking our 5 yr old to the caribbean this year. Just wondering if there is usually enough for them to do. I am thinking he may really love snorkeling and of course the pool, he always does wherever we go.

not sure yet where we would go. we have a ton of marriott points we can use. looking at the virgin islands or the caymans.

another option is also a disney cruise.

thanks for any input!

  • We've taken our kids. The first time they were 1.5 and 5.5 and we went on a 7 day cruise. This year they will be 3 and 7 and we are going to Beaches Turks and Caicos. My kids love the Caribbean and always ask if we can go their on vacation. They love the crystal waters and being able to see the fish
  • my own? No. see 1st siggy line. but we've gone with friends who have and the kids loved it.; they were 4 and 7 i think when we went. to them the fish were the coolest part. they also loved that at our hotel they have a kids program where they can paint ceramic fish or frogs or whatever and then they fire them overnight. the next day the kids go back and they can take their painted fish/frog/etc... home with them. pretty cute.

  • We took our 2 yr old this year, she loves the pool/beach and that kept her plenty busy. Most resorts or hotels will have a kid club for older kids and activities.  Pick a place that is family friendly.
  • just got back from a week in PR with a 4 year old and a 4 month old.  the older boy has been to PR before, as well as Jamaica, St. Thomas (2x) and the Bahamas. Kids love to play in the sand and the water, and since I love the Caribbean, it was important for me that my kids love the water.

I've never been to the Caymans, but I've heard the beach is great for kids, very shallow and calm.

My main advice for traveling with kids is to go for convenience, even if it costs more. It is worth it in the end.

    Enjoy.

We took our daughter to Nevis when she was two.  She loved it and there was plenty to do.  She did go to the kids' club one afternoon while we were out snorkeling on a half day trip, but we bought her a sea window to use while we snorkeled at the hotel beach.

  • We took our 2 1/2 year old to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands last summer.  She cried the whole last day because she didn't want to come home.  We rented a small condo, so we had a kitchen and place for her to sleep as well.  I know St. Thomas has a Marriott property with condos.  I've stayed once in the Marriott Morning Star Resort and we loved it.  Plenty to do there, although all she cared about was playing at the beach!
  • I worked in the USVI for 13 years.  There were a TON of young kids there.  Many people came back year after year.  I think the islands are a great place to take a kid on vacation.  You can 'unplug' them from all the video games and such.   They can play in the pool or the sand.  Go snorkeling.  I find age 4 is the best age to start them off, although of course each child is different.  I've seen 3 year olds do great.  You can take them sailing, on a paddle board, kayaking.  There are a lot of things you can do with them.
