menu critique please.

This is for DD's birthday. Strawberry shortcake theme..Do I have enough food/variety..Its about 25 people , 6-7 which are kids.

Hot roast beef in the crockpot w/ rolls & cheese to make sandwhiches..I'm ordering 6 lbs of this, hoping thats enough?

Homemade mac n cheese

Broccoli salad

Chick Fil A nugget tray ( for the kids and i guess any adults too )..getting a tray of 40 nuggets.

Strawberry & Kiwi fruit skewers  ( colors match the theme )

For apps I have buffalo chicken dip , a few variety of chips in case people want some with their sandwhich, and I think I will do a veggie tray though not sure if thats necessary...and maybe cheese & crackers ?

For drinks, for the kids I have strawberry milk in milk bottles with cute green straws ( getting themey here ); juice, water and soda's, beer & strawberry margaritas for the adults.

For desert, I'm making strawberry cupcakes, ordered strawberry sugar cookies from etsy & Im going to attempt oreo truffle balls dipped in pink melted chocolate.

We have no vegetarians coming and it's all family so I know everyone will like the hot roast beef so I think I'm okay with just that one option for main course..Any other suggestions ?

Re: menu critique please.

  • I would double the nuggets, as, although they're for the kids, the adults will take a few too, and it's better to have too much than not enough.

I wouldn't bother with a cheese and cracker tray, but would have veggies for either a ranch dip or the buffalo dip, and to balance out the protein and starch within the overall meal.

thanks..I just double checked the chick fil a website and the small tray is 64 nuggets, so I think that should be good !  adults will have to let the kids eat first, lol.

  • I was going to say dump the nuggets and make extra mac and cheese. Otherwise I think it looks good.

Maybe don't put them all out at once and/or make a point to bring them out and have the kids go through the line first?

  • I would be surprised if 5 lbs of roast beef was enough for 20 adult-sized sandwiches. That allows for 0.25 of meat/sandwich. If you have big guys who eat more than one, or if people are self-assembling them, you'll probably go through more beef than that. (I'm just picturing the Italian Beef that I buy for parties sometimes - a 5 lb container isn't that large.)

I would probably plan on some extra roast - leftovers freeze really well if you have them.

I was going to order 6 lbs of roast beef..the place i'm getting it from says 1 lb makes 5 sandwhiches...maybe i should go for 7 lbs just to be safe ?  i know men do like to pile it on.

LOL - reading fail on my part, I see now that your post clearly said 6. ;)

If it's not going to break the bank to get 7 lbs, that would probably be a good idea. I've seen enough men assemble Italian Beef sandwiches to know that it's mostly beef, not much bun, restaurant-style.

I subscribe to this. More is always better. Running out sucks.

  • How popular is hot roast beef?  Around here, if you put CFA next to anything, that other thing will be completely untouched; adults or children, it doesn't matter.

I agree that cheese and crackers aren't needed.

Note for the regulars: You may recall that my DH lives elsewhere for work while I'm school and that I have a roommate to offset the cost of two households.  She's from Illinois and made Italian beef a couple weeks ago.  It was the first time I'd ever seen it IRL; I've only heard about it on here.  The house smelled like onions for 3 days - I was NOT amused lol.  I have to say, it's not for me :)

  • HA at Tar!  I didn't know you had a roommate.  I've never made an Italian roast beef either.

I'm usually okay with onions, and love when my MIL makes her tenderloin sandwiches in the crock with sliced onions,  but one time she made it for DH's birthday party and I had to throw all of the leftovers out, as it smelled like actual poop. So gross, and so sad, as the beef was good, just couldn't get over the smell.

This has NOTHING to do with the original post, as I think your party will be lovely. Wink

Around here, very popular, but we are very near Chicago. ;) And maybe it was an odd Italian Beef recipe. Good Italian Beef is really good. (If only I had a blog to refer you to...) ;)

My brothers/cousins/husband etc would side-eye a tray of chicken nuggets at an adult party, LOL.

Haha!  CFA nuggets are THE food for tailgating (manly activity) here.  The men just stand by the platter and hover til they're all gone.
