Anyone know rules for kids and body scanners

I am trying to find out for certain if they can go through the metal detector instead of scanner. Last year they only went through metal detectors and I am hoping it is still the same. And before anyone tells me it is safe, DD has had numerous X-rays of her neck and pelvis and I try to minimize exposure where possible but a pat down would resuld in screams. I am not normally a paranoid person.

Re: Anyone know rules for kids and body scanners

  • According to the TSA website, scanners are optional for all passengers.

They seem to be easing up on the security screenings on kids too. The last time I went through the airport with a child (a couple of months ago), they no longer had to remove their shoes. We all walked right through the metal detecters, no problem. However, if they try to do additional security screening (like a pat down), I don't know that it would be a good idea to try to refuse. I'm sure they've seen screaming kids before and will probably move it along quickly.

  • And in the UK kids are not allowed in them so when you are there it isn't an option

  • I don't know what the official rules are but I seem to recall that they no longer make kids go through the body scanners.

Kids under 12 no longer have to remove shoes.

We've flown 4 times in the past 3 months and every time our entire family went through the metal detectors when every one else w/o kids was directed to the body scanner.  Anyone with kids went through the metal detectors.  This was the same in 4 different airports.

One of the gates at my local airport only has body scanners, no older xray machines.  If I don't want my son to go through the scanner the alternative is a pat down.  I am pregnant and opt out of the body scan and last time I was traveling with LO so they did a pat down on him too.
