Santorini Greece

Has anyone ever taken the ferry from Athens to Santorini Greece?  Just wondering if it's comparable to flying price wise.  I know it takes 8-9hours but if it runs at night it might be an option for me.

Thanks,

Beth

Re: Santorini Greece

  • When we went three years ago, the prices were comparable.  I am pretty certain the ferry does not run at night.  In my opinion, even if you pay more for the flight it is totally worth it.  I think the flight was 35 minutes for us, wheels up to wheels down, which allowed us to enjoy one more day on Santorini.

  • I am unsure of the price difference, but I would definitely recommend the flight over the ferry. I took the ferry ride when I visited Greece but regretted that decision as I could have spent the majority of those 8-9 hours on Santorini had I flown instead.
  • I would also fly.  We only took the ferry because we went from Athens to Naxos first, then on to Santorini afterwards.  We flew back from Santorini to Athens.

The flights weren't that expensive from what I recall, and definitely worth the premium over the ferry given the time savings.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • We few from Athens to Mykonos, then took the ferry in between Mykonos and Santorini and then flew back from Santorini to Athens.

As a PP pointed out, I didn't want to waste all that time on the ferry when I could be enjoying it on the island.

  • Def take the flight unless you plan on jumping off at other islands.  We took the ferry and it was cool to see the other islands as we pulled in and see the rocks jutting out of the ocean but it grew old.  Maybe take the ferry out and fly back.

  • When we went in 2007 we took the ferry from Athens to Santorini & then flew back.  DH had a head cold so the ferry was easier on his sinusus.  We sat in business class, where he slept & I chilled.  As we got closer to Santorini he kept running up to the top deck taking pictures .  He enjoyed it.
