triathletes - training plan question

so I think I've got enough time between my half in June and my sprint in August to follow an actual triathlon training program.  However, all the ones I've seen so far say "bike for xx minutes, run for xx minutes."  I'm used to training for everything based on distance and pace, so I don't know how to translate that into just time.  What kind of effort do you put into just a time based workout?

Are there any beginner plans that have specific distances instead of just times?

Re: triathletes - training plan question

  • I'm not much of a tri plan follower, but many are written in durations instead of distances.  It became painfully obvious why when I was in a generally-beginner-oriented tri club last year.  I was swimming circles around some folks, some folks were running circles around me... the abilities for the different legs were just too varied for one set of distances to work for everyone.  Some people swim lots of yards, kill it in the swim, and then play hang-on.  Others refrain from drowning and then spend the whole rest of the race picking people off.  Things get a little more uniform as you progress to higher skill levels and longer distances, but strengths & weaknesses are still readily apparent.

I don't really know of any that do distances.  I'd suggest using a HRM to make sure you're working at an appropriate level and then figuring out your own distances once you have an idea of your baseline.

  • My plans are time only, but also have heart rate zones with each workout. My hrm monitor isn't working so I go by rpe. I think any plan that you use it will be time oriented.
