What do we think of Barbie?
I know there's been a debate going around on whether Barbie causes unrealistic body expectations in the minds of young girls, rekindled recently by
this lovely lady, (who creeps me the eff out to be honest). So, what do the Niners think of Barbie and will you let your kids play with them?
Re: What do we think of Barbie?
Wow, she is kinda scary.
Honestly, I had lots of barbies growing up. I never thought "gee, I want to look just like that someday". I really don't see the harm in them at all.
I will let Audrey play with them if she wants. But not the Bratz dolls. Those I have a problem with. They look like porn stars.

Personally, I never thought as a kid that I was supposed to look like Barbie when I grow up. I honestly don't know how people would think that. I guess it's like people thinking they're supposed to look like models, which I also never understood. My only gripe is I just wish they weren't all pink or "girlified" if that makes sense. But in general I don't have a problem with Newt playing with barbie dolls.
Indeed. Me either. I loved my Barbies.
Stand up for something you believe in.
Ack! She looks so...plastic.
I don't have a problem with Barbies. I played with them growing up and Ellie will be allowed to play with them if she wants. I fully intend to instill in her that while society may bombard her with images of how she "should" be, that she is perfect just the way she is.
Not to mention that they're creepy as he1l. Same goes for those terrifying Lalaloopsy dolls.
I loved my Barbies but never thought I was supposed to look like her...I just wanted her extensive wardrobe and sweet ride.
Honestly, Barbie can be anything (teacher, rock star, athlete, astronaut, etc...) and I think as long as the parents instill a positive body image in their child then Barbie can do nothing but help a child develop into whatever he or she may want to be.
I also think it's funny this girl is being called "real life" Barbie because I don't think she looks like Barbie at all except for her body shape.
Barbie's face is much prettier and fuller, she smiles, doesn't look like she's in pain or constipated and Barbie has beautiful, full, long hair that you can brush for hours on end (and then come back to 3 days later and it's full of knots)...this girl is not Barbie pretty.
