(vent) I think I figured out why the US has a prescription drug problem

My primary care doctor is a freaking candy man.

I saw him in January for a killer sinus infection and he wrote me a script for cough syrup with hydrocodone (the narcotic part of vicodin) in it.

Then I saw him a few weeks ago for my knee/sciatica and he wrote me an anti-inflammatory, a steroid, and vicodin for breakthrough pain. The thing is A) I'm not in excrutiating pain except when I'm at work and B) I can't take vicodin at work. So I never even filled it.

The pain came back after I stopped taking the steroid, so I called his office yesterday to ask what I should do. They said someone would call me back. Instead I got a call from medical imaging this morning to schedule my MRI of my knee (which I knew would be the plan, but still -- I didn't hear it from my doctor first), and then I got a call from my doctor's office saying my prescription was ready to pick up. I asked what the prescription was --- it's MORE VICODIN!!

I told her I really didn't need any vicodin, and she said she'd hang on to the prescription for two weeks in case I changed my mind. I still have vicodin left over from my wisdom teeth last year and my ER visit last summer after my D&C. I have more vicodin than I will probably ever take in my life, and he keeps giving me prescriptions for it!

No wonder people get addicted to that stuff.

  • You could always sell it...make some extra cash...

  • That's Andy's doctor too. Everything is solved by either a steroid shot or a prescription for pain medication. Its ridiculous.

  • I will say, when you need it, Vicodin is a pretty great thing (after abdominal surgery before going back to work for example). But yeah, unless you're in serious pain that a narcotic will help (ie: no driving, no working) there's no point.  Apparently your Dr has never seen House!

I still have a bottle of Tylenol #3, Vicodin 7.5s and 5s, and the bottle of hycodan cough syrup. I'm pretty well loaded in the narc department, heh.

  • We have a ton of Darvocet from some injury I can no longer recall. We never take a lot when we are in pain, but it has come in handy many times in cases where we know the only medical intervention would be pain meds.

My Dr. actually recommended doing so we save money on co pays and prescriptions when my carpal tunnel acts up or J throws his back out again.
