Wendy: NROLFW

I want more info on this program.  What is the main point of this?  Why do women need new rules?  What were the old rules?  Meatloaf.

Re: Wendy: NROLFW

  • The basic gist is that women don't really need different rules than men. Previously, people recommended low weight, high reps to keep from 'bulking up' (which wouldn't happen anyhow since you arent loaded with testosterone).  To actually build muscle you should focus on heavier weights - and more importantly increasing weight over time) which requires less reps.

The major difference between this and how most guys lift is that it works all muscle groups at once rather than targeting 'back and shoulders' one day 'legs' another, etc.

Check out this web site. The authors hang out there sometimes and can answer all of your questions. The people on the forums are also pretty knowledgeable and supportive (whether you're doing a New Rules program or not).

And, The New Rules of Lifting for Life just came out. It's pretty similar, but gives you way more freedom to make your own workouts.

  • Interesting. I may check out the new book. I like the plan of NROLFW but I'd like some more flexibility since there's a couple activities I fear I may injure myself doing. (I'm looking at you front squat/press)

It's not as bad as I thought!  I just couldn't do very much weight.
