Murad = suck

The girl at Ulta recommended Murad to me for my acne. I used it 3 times over a week, and now my skin is so dry that it hurts. My skin is flaking off like crazy, and it looks worse than the acne.

I knew I shouldn't go with a salicylic acid because I've always been sensitive in the past, but she swore that they got excellent reviews from people in my exact situation.

I've been slathering on moisturizer like there's no tomorrow after using my clarsonic, and have been using the oil cleansing method, so it's slowly helping, but is there anything else I should be doing?

Re: Murad = suck

  • I too am super super sensitive to acne gels (but definitely need them at times!). I overkilled on some benzoyl peroxide once and had your problem :-/ If it's possible, maybe you could go makeup free this weekend? I've found that layering on foundation/concealer/powder irritates the flakiness even worst. But if that's not possible, just keep it super light with a tinted moisturizer. I bought a Boots (from Target) moisturizing mask that I caked on and let it sit on my face for like an hour or so and then put a warm towel over it and laid down with it on my face for 10ish minutes. Then I took the warm towel and super gently rubbed in a circular motion around the flakes to try and slough them off. Then I layered on some Bobbi Brown Extra moisturizer and let it sink in all night. While it sounds intense, it really helped my skin. If you can't run out to get a moisture mask, just cake on some of your regular moisturizer so it covers your face like a mask would.

  • Here are random suggestions:

    - I like the Clinique 3 piece acne kit, but it has two products with SA...

    - Do you respond adversely to benzoyl peroxide?

    - What about the tea tree line at Body Shop?

    - DDF makes products with glycolic acid...maybe that would be better? Just do a normal cleanser for sensitive skin and then a good acne gel or moisturizer?

  • Products with SA can really dry out the skin. This happened to me when I first started using Clinique, I had a purge period where my acne multiplied and my skin got so dry it looked crummy, but I was warned that this might happen and just stick with it so I did, and now I've got clear skin again. Your situation could be just like mine. You've only used the product for a week. I was also recommended to lessen usage if my skin start getting real dry so if you do twice a day, take it down to just once like in the morning, and use a different face wash/moisturizer in the evening.

  • Murad was awful for me too.

    I really like Suki Exfoliating scrub- no salicylic acid and its all natural. You can get it from birchbox.com and other places. I alternate this with DDF acne control foam cleanser (sephora), and Origins Checks and Balances. I find using different products on different days has made my skin better.

    I moisturize with argan oil.
