A boy was kidnapped up the street from my house this morning

Shits. He was walking to his international school. I swear I don't live in a dangerous neighborhood. This is super scary.

Re: A boy was kidnapped up the street from my house this morning

  • :( Were there witnesses? Do they have any idea where he might have been taken or is it possible he ran off?
  • The alert I got said he was forced into a van by two Indian men, so someone must have seen something.
  • It apparently happened right outside the school. I know try have cameras there so I'll bet it's on video.
  • Yikes. I hope they find him safe soon. :(

Someone got mugged at gun point not to far down the street from us. Guy shot in the air too. The other weekend a Taxi driver was attempting to rape a girl in an alley three blocks from us. Thankfully someone woke up to the screams and then chased the dude till police nabbed him. I'm happy we are going up to the quiet village life tomorrow for the weekend.

  • So scary! I hope they find him quickly!
  • The boy is Dutch.  I realize that any type of kidnapping is a parent's worst nightmare, but it feels like having it happen in another country would be a million times worse.

Definitely a millions time worse in my opinion to have your child kidnapped while abroad. Obviously you never want it to happen but I imagine emotionally and support wise it's way harder.

     Any new news?

  • That's terrible. I really hope he's okay.

  • His dad's all over twitter.  All I've seen so far is that the car had fake plates on it and it was caught on CCTV and several people saw it.

The kid was not walking far at all.  His building is literally 200m from the school.

  • Oh my goodness, that is awful and so.scary! I hope he is found soon! Do they think the kidnappers are after a ransom or something? My heart goes out to the family. How awful.

  • That is terrifying, my heart goes out to the family.

Just at an initial thought, though, I'd almost rather something like that happen as an expat abroad rather than at home, if that makes any sense.

My first impression is that a dutch family living in Kuala Lumpur with their son attending an international school are: very well off, the dad works in some sort of powerful business. Based on these assumptions ( correct or not ), I'm then also assuming that the motivation behind the kidnapping is either financial or business related, at which point a ransom will hopefully be requested and paid.

I think that this is somewhat comforting because the motive to kidnap a dutch expat kid in Kuala Lumpur is probably not paedo-related, custody related or just "sick " related. So the kid's chances of being alright are probably better than if this had happened at home.

As for finding the kid, I'd almost rather this happened as an expat living abroad because 1. the embassy would be heavily involved, 2. if the embassy wasn't, the media is going to motivate them to get heavily involved, 3. The local police will be getting more pressure to deal with it than they would a local issue (embassy and international media related) and 4. the business and its' associates would probably also become heavily involved.

I could be way off base, but embassy and media support in finding my kid would trump family support any day.

Chronically hilarious - you'll split your stitches!
I wrote a book! Bucket list CHECK!
  • I. Hate reading things like this, so sad and scary. I hope he is home safe soon.
  • According to the family the police officer assigned to investigate didn't turn up for several hours after the kidnapping was reported.  On top of that the kid's dad is Indian and Indians can be a bit...discriminated against here.  I hope things turn around.
  • Is this a bad time to ask if your elevator ever got fixed?

No, it's fixed.  He does live in the building that's been having the issues with key-cards being cloned and used for break-ins though.  It's supposed to be state of the art and makes me wonder if something more is going on.

That would definitely make me wonder if it's all related.

  • Tofu, I agree with a lot of your points, although what Publius then said about the parents being Indian might change things a little.

No matter when or where, I think a child being kidnapped is any parent's worst nightmare. I hope they find him safe very soon.

  • Hopefully it is financially related and the boy will be returned unharmed. What an awful thing for him and his family :(

The family seems to be just an average expat family.  I don't think they're loaded.

That video is really hard to watch for me. I'm in tears. I cannot imagine everything going through his parents' heads right now. I really hope he gets returned safely and soon.

  • I can't even imagine! Sad

The way it happened, it really sounds like a financial motivation, so if the family isn't wealthy, I wonder why they took him. If it was just anti-Indian sentiment, there are lots of clearer things to do, and taking a child is only going to build support in the rest of the populace.

Me too. That is just so, so terrible.  I will keep them in my thoughts and I hope he gets back safely.
