Day trip operators in Iceland

Any recs?  There's tons online.  Trying to price it out & see if tours vs. car rental will be cheaper.  Thanks!

Re: Day trip operators in Iceland

  • Depends what you want to do -some things you can't do on your own unless you have a seriously kitted out car, which to me isn't worth the hassle. But driving the Golden Circle or looking for the northern lights, anything on/close off the Ring Road, you can definitely drive yourself and it will nearly always be cheaper. But I would only book a car for the days you absolutely need it (you don't need it in Reykjavik at all).

I've booked with a few different operators depending on what I wanted to do - snorkeling, dogsledding, horseback riding, caving, etc. Reykjavik Excursions and Greyline are the two big ones but there are lots of smaller operators.

  • We used this company back in September, and all of the tours were fantastic, and reasonably priced.  http://iceland.nordicvisitor.com/

We did the glacier climb - amazing, you should do this!  http://daytours.nordicvisitor.com/iceland/activity-tours/blue-ice-glacier-hike-and-climbing/243/default.aspx

The Golden Circle tour (you see SO much), a trip to the Blue Lagoon, and went horseback riding through lava fields.

Here's a link to their activity tours, which are some of the most adventurous.  http://daytours.nordicvisitor.com/iceland/activity-tours/

Poke around the website.  There's so much to choose from.

What hotel are you staying at?  They do pick-ups at most local hotels.

Have fun!  Eat local fish, skyr (similar to yogurt - a must), and Iceland hot dogs.  They are to die for.

  • A few more things to add:

-We are hoping to go back this fall, and will definitely rent a car.  You can do the Golden Circle yourself.  I suggest printing off some online tour descriptions, and mapping them out yourself.

-You can drive to the Blue Lagoon yourself.

-If you do a glacier hike or climb, I don't know how to go about booking other than to have the company pick you up at your hotel or designated location.

  • How long are you there?  If only a few days, I would definitely skip the Blue Lagoon.  We were completely underwhelmed by the place and it was expensive.

We did an amazing trip through dive.is where we snorkeled in Silfra and then did the Golden Circle.  If you're up for suiting up and braving the cold, you HAVE to do snorkeling.  It was so cool!

We also did a really great tour through Iceland Rovers where we went out into Thorsmork Glacier Valley.  We drove up to the foot of the volcano that erupted a couple of years ago, forded rivers, saw 4-5 waterfalls, did a nice hike out in the valley, etc.  I highly recommend Iceland Rovers and the Thorsmork tour.
