South France

Trying to help my sister do some trip research; she's flying into Nice for a 4-day wknd in June by herself.  She's debating btwn staying Nice or Cannes.

Any recs on deciding btwn the two?  It seems like Cannes has better beaches?  Dining and accommodation recs welcomed too please.  Ideally under 150E/night

Re: South France

  • I haven't been to Cannes but would definitely recommend Nice as an excellent central location to base oneself from in the Riviera. Although the water is pretty, I don't particularly care for any beaches on the Riviera; most are pebble beaches instead of sand. Make sure she visits Villefranche-sur-Mer. It was my favorite little town in the Riviera. I have a blog entry here on my visit to the Riviera.
  • I didn't stay in Cannes, but I went to Nice once in June for a four day weekend and I highly recommend it.  The beaches are nice, but pebble.

The Farmer's Market in Nice is like my dream come true, it's INCREDIBLE.

I don't have specific restaurant recs, but the fish soup and the local rose wines are YUMMY.

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • I would also recommend Nice.  I wasn't too impressed w/ Cannes (don't get me wrong, the water's beautiful) but not so much to actually do.  Nice is more a mid-sized city, so various price point options for lodging, dinner, etc.  Easy access to smaller towns too.  Nice is Nice ;)!

ETA:  I liked Nice so much last time I was there for a day trip (staying in San Remo), that this time around, I'm staying in Nice.  I haven't been to the hotel yet (going late May-early June), but the reviews were good and the price reasonable:  H?tel les Cigales

  • Ditto PPs....there is lots to do in Nice and the beach is nice (although pebble).  I have a post in my blog (below) about my time in Nice...although I was chaperoning high schoolers so it wasn't as fun as it could be...haha!

  • I;d take Nice over Cannes any day!!! Nice is way more interesting - amazing restaurants, beaches, shops, etc. Cannes is actually a wee bit - boring?

  • I thought Nice was dirty and I preffered Cannes or Juan-les-Pins. I really liked the beaches in Cannes and Juan-les-Pins, also you don't have to stay all day in these cities, if you want to visit Nice or Monaco for the day, it's very easy to take the train.

When I was in Nice, it was shoulder season and I always saw those street cleaners out, people picking up litter, etc. I could see that in the summer it might be really congested.

I will add to the OP that wherever you decide to stay, you can take the train to the other cities for the day quite easily. I'd definitely go into Monaco for the day.

  • I preferred Cannes to Nice, b/c I liked the sandy beaches there. However, I would base yourself in Nice b/c Cannes is $$$$.

I stayed in Cannes at Hotel American (lol!), and it was really good value. I would have preferred to stay in Nice, but we just wanted to lay on the beach. I had also been to Nice once before and wanted to stay somewhere else.

Monaco is a nice day trip, but don't stay there. So expensive $$$$!
