Homework is not helpful: citations?

I know we have discussed this in the past, but of course I didn't save the citations.  Can anyone point me to studies showing that homework in elementary school is not beneficial?

Backstory:  DS (4) got sent home a 90 page (no that is not a typo) workbook that he is supposed to finish by May 15th. Kids who finish the workbook get a treat in class.

Re: Homework is not helpful: citations?

  • You're in the TC's. Just curious, what school district? We're moving there.

90 pages, by May 15th, hmmmm that breaks down to 5 pages per day...for a 4 year old? Jeeze. Sounds like the teacher got behind.

  • When did he get it?

  • Actually we just moved to the Columbus, OH area.

We lived in St Anthony Village, MN, and loved it.  In fact, want to buy our house?  Seriously though, the schools are awesome, and as a result of that it has a great neighborhood feel with TONS of families with young kids.  If we ever move back to MN (fingers crossed) we would likely buy in SAV again.

Today I asked DS if he wanted to sit with me and work on his "work" while I did my work on the computer, and he said no, he wanted to build marbleworks.  So much more age appropriate for a 4, IMO!

I have to call the teacher Monday and I am not looking forward to it. If there was no "reward" for finishing the whole thing, I would just blow it off completely, but I don't want DS to show up at school and be the only kid who doesn't get a cupcake.  If the teacher won't budge I might just keep him home that day.

Yesterday (they have school M-Thurs, Friday off.  I called today and his teacher was not in).

  • Alfie Kohn has a book/articles and there is another book called "the case against homework"
  • I wouldn't give my 8th graders 90 pages of a WB to complete in 2 weeks.....

    That is ridiculous.

  • What? That is CRAZY. I would not do it and I would contact school with your concerns.

    Same. Something is wrong.

Alfie Kohn is the no-homework guru. "The Homework Myth", maybe?

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • I'd do it myself and I'd start with the teacher and take it to the principal. Check your district's policy.
  • Read anything by Alfie Kohn and throw the workbook in the recycle bin, stat.
  • I wouldn't bother with the studies.  Speak with the teacher first.  Depending upon how that goes, speak with the principal.

I'm also thinking you aren;t the only parent questioning this....and rightly so.

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.
  • PleasE do not go in with studies btw. They will write you off as a no homework nut job ( I'm not saying those who are anti hw are nut jobs but that is a perception out there). Don't combat one extreme with another extreme. Even those who are very pro homework would think that is nuts. Go talk to them first, without the studies.

Exactly.  I don't think this (extreme) situation is support for the no homework cause.

Ditto. I wouldn't go in quoting experts, but reading up on the subject and the studies can give you good talking points. Most of the talking points are what your gut is telling you anyway.

Don't worry, I just want to do some reading about it, make sure I am using the right terminology, and have then on hand for future reference.

  • What does the work entail? I have lots of workbooks for the kid's and they can do 5 pages in 10 minutes. Like circle the animals that start with "s"? Might not be that much work.

They wouldn't be if he wanted to do them and it wasn't a battle.  Although, still, I have to read the directions and explain every one to him.  And mostly, he just wants to color on them, or circle all the things, etc.  Not underline this, x out that, circle this.

Yeah, that amount of homework is ridiculous.  Way too much.  I have been a little bit behind where I was last year, but I wouldn't dream of giving the kids all the work just because I was behind.

I really like 2v's advice here to speak with the teacher first.  It is possible that the teacher misspoke or was kidding.  Unlikely, but possible.

I like the idea that you go to the source first, then to the principal if there's no satisfaction.  I had a parent go over my head to the principal this year, and it really stings me to this day.  (Actually, I think the parent complained about the guidance counselor, not me, but I made an easier target because the guidance counselor's the superintendent's relative.)

  • By the way, that's neat that you live in Columbus.  My relatives live in the Canal Winchester area and work at Grant Hospital.  Are you around Dublin Scioto?  I went to a conference there; that high school is a PALACE.
