Maine Roadtrip

My bf and I are planning a trip to Maine in early August. We're thinking about 4 days and we'd like to fly into/out of Portland, then drive up and down the coast, stopping at some nice little towns.

Any suggestions on which way to go from Portland? North or South? Any fun little towns worth checking out? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Maine Roadtrip

  • We stayed in Boothbay Harbor a few years ago and loved it. Great restaurants, cute little shops and beautiful views. We did a puffin boat tour, a seal boat tour and drove up to Bingham for a moose tour. We also did a whale watching tour out of Boothbay but we didn't really see anything. That was in July so not sure what difference the time of year makes.
  • I loved Maine! We stayed in Portland and did day trips.

One day we drove north and stopped at Pemaquid Point - very cool lighthouse and it's a nice drive away. Along the way, you HAVE to stop at Red's Eats. It's a very famous lobster shack (always featured on Food Channel, etc). Best lobster roll anywhere, and you get SO much lobster.

I'd say go north, and just get lost. There's so much charm to be found, and LOTS of great food to eat as well!

  • I grew up in Southern Maine so I would suggest Kennebunkport, York and Oquinquit but if you go north some great towns are:

    Camden/Rockport

    Boothbay Harbor

    Bar harbor/Acadia National park

    Acadia is wonderful-so scenic!

In Portland there are great restaurants--555 and Fore street are 2 fantastic places to eat dinner.

You should also eat at the Lobster Shack in Cape Elizabeth (right next to Portland) It has yummy seafood that you can eat outside overlooking a lighthouse and it is BYOB. Also, great pasteries for dessert.

It is also nice to take a boat trip around Casco bay--they have lots of them leaving from the pier right in downtown Portland. I would definitely spend a day and night in Portland--very fun small city--walk around the shops of the old port, go to a nice dinner, take a boat cruise,etc..

  • Oh my gosh, I just typed up a huge reply and TN ate it. Grr!!

I'm not typing it again, so I just wanted to say I also grew up in southern Maine and meplusone has some great ideas. Whether you decide to go north or south, you'll find lots of great things to do. Bar Harbor is one of my favorite places in the whole world and Acadia NP offers lots of great scenic drives and hikes.

  • Maine is beautiful!  You need to go to Acadia Nat'l Park.  I'd also recommend a whale watch out of nearby Bar Harbor.  I'd also suggest taking the scenic route wherever you decide to drive & avoid 95:

  • Meplusone has some good recs.  I also wanted to give a shout out to a B&B we love in Portland called the Inn on Carleton.  The inn owner is super nice and makes fantastic breakfasts.  Portland has a really great restaurant scene as mentioned.  You can visit the Shipyard Brewery and do a tour and tasting.  We did a lighthouse tour of Casco Bay and it was enjoyable but it was raining so it was not fun to be on the top deck.

If you start pricing out the flights and they are super expensive, you can fly into Manchester, NH (MHT) or Boston (BOS) and drive up to Maine.  It's only about a 2 hour drive from Boston to Portland (assuming it's not a Thurs or Fri afternoon when traffic will be heavy).

We've spent the day in Kennebunkport too but that was a few years ago.

  • I am from Maine (moved to NY to be with my then boyfriend, now FI)

I am from the Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park region but that is a loooong day trip from Portland (about 3 hours each way-I went to college in Portland so I know the drive well).

PP's covered it.  I hope you enjoy your trip!
