Any tips from runners with bunions?

I have bunions and lovely flat feet.  I usually just jog on the treadmill for 3miles/30 minutes and haven't really had a problem with them.  (my big toe/side of foot just get kind of achy- no big deal).    Since January I've been slowly upping my distance and once I get over 4 miles they really are starting to hurt!  Any tips?  I was fitted with shoes in February so they should still be ok.

Re: Any tips from runners with bunions?

  • I have one bad one on my left foot.  I use toe separators next to my big toe to try and keep it aligned and not turning in.  The ones I have are foam and a bit bigger than gel ones.  The gel ones don't seem to do anything for me because they are too small.
  • My personal answer is bunion surgery - I am having my first on June 13 on my left foot, and the right foot 4-5 months later. But I am doing the extreme after more than 2 years of trying everything else through my podiatrist. I would recommend seeing a podiatrist so they can examine your feet. Mine gave me athletic orthotics with support in the upper part of the foot by my bunion. This helped for a year or 2 while running but my bunions are too severe for just the orthotics, so I am opting for surgery in hopes of fixing the problem.

  • Do you need a wider toebox?  I have pretty big bunions and they don't bother me at all.  I have narrow feet and run in Brooks Adrenalines...
  • Thank you so much for the suggestions!  It sounds like making an appointment with a podiatrist would be a good starting place.   Hopefully it will be an ?easy? fix like getting new shoes/orthotics/toe separators.

Hokiegirl82- Good luck with the upcoming surgery!  My dad is having it done in the Fall?

  • I don't have bunions yet, but my toebox is 4 inches wide without them so I have to be very careful about the shoes I wear. I also recommend the podiatrist route for custom-cast orthotics. They usually run around $300/pair and often aren't covered by health insurance, but they last a long time and have made all the difference for me. My personal favorite have been carbon fiber in 3/4 length since they're light but strong and don't use up  any space in the toe area.
