Cardio vs. NROLFW vs. CrossFit?
I'm trying to tone and lost fat/weight- what would you recommend to achieve this goal?
My new gym doesn't offer classes (boo), and while I hate HATE treadmill/cycling, I can tolerate (barely though) the elliptical machine. I get bored incredibly easily on those (even with watching music videos on my iPad or listening to my iTunes).
How long and how often?
Re: Cardio vs. NROLFW vs. CrossFit?
I started NROLFW in January and I love it. I was never good at coming up with and sticking to lifting programs, but this has been wonderful. I still do cardio with running and soccer throughout the week, but I base my workouts around NROLFW for the most part.
I've pretty much always been active, but NROLFW helped me get over a plateau of not losing weight and not gaining muscle. I did 2 free sessions of crossfit which were ok, but definitely not worth the money to me now since I don't have an unlimited budget.
I also started the NROLFW in January and I love it. I'm on stage 3 now and I've seen some great changes in by body. I love the structure in the program and feel that the majority of the exercises are great.
Since I do the program with DH we work around his night shift work schedule and usually only get 2 lifting sessions in a week. On my off days I run. Right now I'm doing a speed training program and run 3-4 times a week. I try to hit 6 workouts a week but sometimes I need the extra day off and I don't feel bad about taking it.
I've never done cross fit so I have no advise/insight for you there.
I don't have any experience with NROLFW, but I've been doing CrossFit for several months now. I like CrossFit for several reasons - it's usually a pretty hard workout, you're doing it with other people, and most importantly, there are trainers there making sure you use proper form. It is possible to do CrossFit WODs at home/on your own as well, but I strongly suggest working with a competent trainer first if you're going to do any barbell lifts that you don't have experience with. It's very easy to have bad form and injure yourself lifting weights if you don't know what you're doing. That said, not all CrossFit trainers are created equal - you can run a gym after a one-weekend training course - so do a little research and make sure they know what they're talking about. Many trainers have additional credentials. CrossFit is usually kind of expensive though, so you could try it for a month and then do your own thing.
I go to CrossFit 3x per week, soon I'm increasing to 5x. I try to do other (cardio) on the non-CrossFit days, either going for a run or biking to work.
This exactly. Crossfit changed my life. No joke. It's amazing.
