England, Scotland, Ireland

I have eight days and want to see the highlights from each of the above countries. How should I best split up my time?

I will be starting in London, and flying home from Dublin.

 Thanks!!!

Re: England, Scotland, Ireland

  • In England I would spend 2 full days in London, then maybe a day trip--whatever interests you--Bath, Oxford, the Lakes District, Cornwell, York, Stratford-on-Avon....

In Scotland, I would go to Edinburgh--such a wonderful city--again, you could do a day trip to a castle or some other area from there but you could easily spend 2 days in Edinburgh.

In Ireland, I love Dingle, Kenmare, Ring of Kerry-I would probably only spend one day in Dublin. IMO, Ireland is best seen in the small towns and driving around the country.

    Enjoy!

  • That's waaaay too much for 8 days. That's like wanting to do Chicago, D.C. and New York in a week. It's possible, but you'll be really rushed and you'll lose a full day in travel.

I'd stick to London and Ireland. How you split it up depends on whether you're willing to rent a car in Ireland. It's the best way to see the countryside, which IMO is a lot more interesting than Dublin.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

  • I agree - I'd only pick 2 of those, and since you're flying into London and out of Dublin, then do England and Ireland.  Three or so days in London, maybe a day trip to Windsor, Oxford, Cambridge.  Fly to Dublin, spend a couple days touring the Ring of Kerry.

Even then, it's going to be an exhausting trip.

I agree. I'd spend a few days in London, then fly to Shannon, rent a car and go to Dingle, Aran Islands, etc on the Western Coast of Ireland for the remainder of the trip.

You'll BARELY have enough time to see one place properly with that amount of time.  But, if you stick to just London and just a few towns in Ireland (dont bother with Dublin except to get there the night before you leave), you'll at least get a taste of each place :)

  • You can do Edinburgh in 2 days, you could spend 3 days in Ireland, doing Galway or Kilarney or Ring of Kerry and 3 days in London. It is doable. It sounds like you since you just want to do highlights you know you aren't going to see everything. To maximize time I would fly between these places though.

  • Can't speak for England or Scotland, but as for Ireland, I'd vote to skip Dublin.  Do the West instead--a day in the Aran Islands and definitely hit Galway for more of the "city" life--lots to do but not as bland as Dublin (by bland, I mean you won't get as much of a cultural taste of things).  (Oh, and you can take the boat to the Aran Islands from Galway's city centre).  Have fun!
  • We did a week in each and still missed a gazillion things.  The pared down list I'd go with:

London, Bath,  ferry to Dublin, Newgrange (do not miss this), Bunratty Castle.  We drove across Ireland then came back to Dublin.
