Bought my first dress in probably 8 years!

I am a bigger girl (size 16) and I havent worn a dress for years because most dresses made me look pregnant or I just wasn't comfortable in them. I haven't owned a bathing suit since high school, and I have not worn shorts since high school either.

I've been reading/posting here and following a bunch of fashion blogs. I basically live in ill fitting, baggy jeans and t shirts and cardigans.

Today I went shopping and I bought a pair of bermuda shorts, and a dress! I was so proud of myself for trying things on that I would usually not even look at, and shocked that I found things that were actually flattering!

The dress I bought is just a casual shirtdress, in black. Any inspiration for styling it? Anyone have photos of themselves wearing a shirtdress that I can look at? I am learning that i am hopeless at putting together outfits but having a photo to "follow" makes me actually successful!

Thank you girls for being such a friendly board and inspiring me to dare to try some new things on.

  • Good for you!!  I guarantee you that a nice fitting dress looks more flattering than baggy jeans and t shirts!

I'm a size 18/20 and know it can be tough to find flattering things that are flattering and don't look like a grandma.

And GIRL, you've got to get yourself a bathing suit!!!  I'm even bigger than you, and am not going to let that keep me from enjoying the beach or pool!!!  I like this website for swimsuits.  http://www.alwaysforme.com/swimplussiz.html  I have this suit in the pink color and feel great in it.  http://www.alwaysforme.com/tankini-plus-size-swimsuit-80913wa.html

  • haha, I can't even wear a sleeveless top, so a bathing suit is a long way away. I have to have sleeves because I freak out about my huge arms.

I don't wear sleeveless tops, either.  I guess I just love to swim so much that I can't imagine not wearing a bathing suit.

  • a black shirt dress is a great blank canvas! get some cute metallic sandals and a great pair of big earrings for a casual look, and maybe some wedges and a bib necklace for something a little more dressed up.
  • Congrats!  I'm hoping to say the same thing in a few weeks! I've lost a considerable amount of weight and have worn 2 dresses in 20 years - my wedding dress and a bridesmaid dress. I've stayed as far away from dresses as possible! Please, tell us more about your dress...can you share a link...it sounds beautiful!
  • You should totally rock some awesome heels and cateye sunglasses w/ that shirtdress, pinup style.
