Anyone apply for jobs in the States while overseas?

DH goes back on the job market this year, and we trying to figure out the logistics of being overseas while applying. Should he put a permanent US address and our current address on his resume?

thankfully the academic hiring process is while he is on summer break here, so if need be, he will fly back to the US and stay for the 2ish months.

anyone have some first hand experience with this?

Re: Anyone apply for jobs in the States while overseas?

  • Yes, both DH and I have done this, although within our companies. We were up front about our situation and needing relocation assistance if we were to take on a role in the US. Both companies were understanding and willing to provide this.

Otherwise, we use Magic Jack to give us a US number and I usually don't list my address at all on my CV--just my email and phone number. There are a lot of security reasons to withhold an address anyway, and if they are keen, we can discuss where I live and where I'm willing to live when they contact me.

I definitely keep this in mind. We were thinking of getting a Skype number, but I hear that Magic Jack is more reliable. I will look into that.

We won?t get any relocation from his current University, except for our tickets back to the US.  However, we will negotiate relocation costs with his hopefully new job.

  • Does your DH do a lot of networking?  I got my current job in the US while I was still in the NL.  I just reached out to folks and let them know I was coming home and who had room for me.  I found the best way by going through people I knew.

    Good luck

He is a professor, so he will reach out to those who are already in a school.  Otherwise, he will just go to the major searches and apply there.

If he doesn?t get a job in the US, we will stay here, but he wants to stay here, but I think he?d rather go up for a more competitive job.

  • DH only sort of did. They were for internal transfers with his employer but in another country. S they knew when he applied it would mean moving him but they were still ok with it.
  • With the rising costs of plane tickets in the US, I am not sure that flying internationally will be all that much cheaper.
