2 Yr Old Car Seat On Plane

What are you thoughts on bringing a car seat for a two year old for a plane trip?  We always bought him a seat before he was 2, but now I am told it is not mandatory.  We are going to be lugging around enough stuff which will complicate matters, and we do not need the car seat for transportation for where we are going.  What are your thoughts?

Re: 2 Yr Old Car Seat On Plane

  • My thoughts are no.  That puts him in prime seat in front of him kicking.

    We use a CARES harness.

  • That's great, thank you so much!!  I was wondering if there was a contraption like that.  I saw a store within 45 mins of me that sells it, I'm going tomorrow!!  Thanks so much....that makes me feel better....

1000% agree. Don't do it, get the CARES

  • We have never used a car seat on a plane with DD. It hasn't been a problem. We used the CARES harness with limited success and eventually ditched that, too, but it's a good option.

  • I vote yes, because they can't undo it or get out of it, no matter what. So even if they're trying to run crazy, they can't.

We use her carseat without issue, she knows not to kick and she is more comfortable in her own seat than something new.

This, we borrowed CARES from a friend and it didn't work with DS. He is crazy tall and I still felt the fit was off. he figured out how to work around the harness if you will. If you child is not going to mess with buckles then it is a good option.

Yeah, the CARES is only secured by the aeroplane seat belt, so he will be able to undo it if he wants to. It also has nothing between their legs, so they can slip out of the bottom of it.

And some kids don't. Our son has flown with it many many times, dOmestic and international and has never undone the belt or slipped out. I prefer the risk than having him kick the seat in front of him for 9 hours in a car seat. Depends on the child

  • We took DD on the plane in her car seat when she was 2 (exactly), she could just barely reach the seat in front of her (she is 33 inches) with her feet and didn't kick.  She was happy in her car seat and slept a lot of the flight. Not might work as well when she is taller.....

The tray table is more of a hassle for mine than kicking the seat. I just introduce them to the person in front and that seems to do the trick in terms of them understanding why they can't.

We have used teh carseat and CARES.  We prefer the carseat only because he prefers the carseat.  With CARES he didn't sleep and with the carseat he passed out the entire flight all 4 times, so for us it's a no brainer.

  • DD is a the size of a 4 year old.(she is 2.5 years) So that to me means we can't take the car seat which is fine by me. I know she will kick. I think she will be fine without the CARES system. She is large for her age. We will see how it goes. 26 days till our flight.
