Running in the rain

I haven't had this issue yet because I used a treadmill during the winter, and since winter's over, the weather has been really nice.

Well, it's been raining all week and tomorrow is my long run (13k- just starting off with half training). I canNOT do it on the treadmill. I think I would die of boredom.

I also don't want to miss it, and I doubt I'd do it during the week (because of work).

How hard of rain are you willing to run in?

What do you wear?

Re: Running in the rain

  • It's not that bad running in the rain. I live in Seattle and don't even own a running rain jacket. I just layer up with a tank, wicking shirt and maybe a light pullover jacket (depending on the temperature). I survive.

However, one time it was POURING and cold on one of my long runs, at about mile 10 I called DH to pick me up because it was so dang cold and wet out and I was freezing!! But usually, I just run.

  • I don't mind running in the rain as long as it's not super cold and windy. The only thing I do is wear a hat to keep the water out of my eyes.

  • I've been soaked to the skin before even leaving my street before.

As long as I have the right gear and some anti-chafe smeared on, it's NBD. I won't purposely go out if it's thundering/lightning, but there has been a time or two when I've been caught in similar conditions, including hail. Just makes me run faster. ;)

  • If it's over 50 degrees out, NBD, it's fun! If it's cold, eh, not so fun, but doable as long as you dress well - wool helps, or if you have a jacket that will actually keep you partially dry.
  • Light rain? No problem, and a little fun. Cold rain? Not so fun, but I've done it with either a trash bag with holes for head and arms or a disposable, thin rain jacket to keep my core warm. I layer, wear ear warmers and gloves if cold. A hat would probably be really helpful. And something to change into as soon as you get in the car/ your house.
