Kink in neck- 1 week before HM :( WWYD?

ugh! I some how slept very wrong on Friday night and I woke up yesterday morning with the worst kink in my neck/upper back (stiff neck). I had hoped to get a moderate run in this weekend (6-8 miles) but I am not sure it is safe for me to be out there running when my neck is killing me and I can hardly turn.

This is my first HM. My longest run was 12 miles last weekend. WWYD? Am I totally sabotaging myself if I take yesterday and today off?  Any recommendations for healing this quick?

  • I can never remember if you're supposed to ice or heat a stiff neck.. but I would take some time to do anything you can to get it to loosen up over the next couple of days. I wouldn't worry about getting in a longer run this weekend - maybe do 6 miles sometime during the week? You've already done 12 which means you know you can do 13.1.

Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

  • I'd say put some heat on & try to stretch it. You could try some arnica gel too... I've been using it on my knees, but tried it on my neck this week- I also had a kink in my neck! Owch! I don't know about the running... I'm just a beginning myself. GL!

  • As someone who suffers from chronic back and neck issues, I feel your pain...literally.  Here is what I would do:  Start with ice on the area 10 minutes on, 30 minutes off.  Go online and get some neck stretch ideas. Repeat them as often as you can.  Also, keep mobile!  If running hurts see if you can do some walking.  I find that the more I am moving, the better it starts to feel.  The inclination when you are hurting is to sit and to try not to move, but gentle exercise is actually more effective in speeding up the recovery time.  Finally, if your neck is not improving in the next couple of days I would advise trying to see either a chiropractor or physical therapist.

Best of luck on your 1/2!

  • I've been able to fix my neck issues in the past few months myself rather than seeing my chiropractor.  I use the rag doll pose from yoga for a couple minutes at a time several times a day.  I've been seeing a chiropractor on and off for several years but rag doll seems to really help me get everything back in line and relieve some of the pressure.  It can't hurt, right?

  • My chiropractor says ice, only. Heat causes muscles to swell, which will make you feel worse in the long run. Ice 20 minutes on, 40 minutes off. Take some Tylenol/Ibuprofen. I wouldn't run, but I'd do something like the elliptical or bike, to keep moving. If it continues to hurt/gets worse, I would see a chiropractor for an adjustment/to get the kink out.
