There was a child from hell on my last flight

and I was laughing because we were just battling about this on here, weren't we?

Kid was about 10 years old, the toys he brought for the flight included a kid's electric piano and a horn. And an iPad. He was given free reign on the plane by his parents and was sitting next to a single woman with an infant and was so disruptive to the woman and her baby ( beside his parents, mind you) that the woman was moved by the flight attendants to a jump seat, so the baby could sleep.

The kid wandered up and down the isles with his iPad getting in everyone's way, stepping on people's feet and watching their screens over their shoulders. He spilled his coke on random people while running with it up and down the aisles and screamed bloody murder for another ice cream.

I'll take a screaming baby any day over that kid.

  • DON'T JUDGE!

You just don't understand what has happened in to the child in the previous 15 hours that could have caused this behaviour.  Because, you know, he is just an angel at home Wink

  • LOL. Yeah, part of me was like well, maybe the kid has issues or something happened and I don't know his whole story, but the other part of me was like A: issues or not, if your kid is being a brat on a plane and disrupting other passengers you should at least try to do something about it. Or at least put up a futile act of making it look like you care. and B: who the fuuuuck gives their child musical instruments to play with on a 13 hour plane journey.

  • Horrible. Were the parents even trying to get him calmed down? And who believes that musical instruments are something that a child needs on a 13 hour flight? Parenting fail.

What were the parents doing while the kid was being a general nuisance?

  • Sleeping, reading and watching movies. I'm completely serious. I couldn't believe it.

While they were doing all that I would have interrupted them to talk about absolutely nothing of value.  Especially during their sleep.

I am sooo going to remember this one.

  • I want to believe there was something wrong with the kid.  HOWEVER in this case the parents should have been with him and not sleeping.

Lots of kids I work with go on long trips, to India, Africa etc and I always think of the poor people on the plane with them as they scream bloody murder for hours.

As a former flight attendant, what jumps out at me is the bolded, which is illegal. lol.

But anyway, I hate parents that don't parent. HATE.

  • That sounds heinous.

Did the flight attendant attempt to talk to the parents at all about taking control of the situation?

I think this pretty much sums up what really gets people worked up. If your baby or child is screaming and you're obviously doing everything you can to comfort him/her and throwing the other passengers apologetic looks with tears of frustration in your eyes, I don't think too many people are going to get that upset. Will they be annoyed that your kid is screaming? Sure, but I don't think they'll get all judgy. But just sitting there relaxing while the kid is doing everything you mentioned? Unacceptable parenting.

Then again, maybe the parents just have an anti-authoritarian parenting style (I actually knew a girl who talked about her cousins who were "raised" that way - their parents didn't want them to respect any authority, so big shock when the 15-year-old son hit his mom because she wanted him to do something he didn't want to). Anyway, if that's how they parent, who are you to judge? Wink

Seriously, though, I hope you were able to do a lot of ignoring while you watched some great movies and thought "Thank God he's not mine."

  • A 10 year old being a brat deserves to be judged. Short of a problem (and then the parents should be doing everything to calm him) he is old enough to sit still on a flight of any length. Bad bad bad.

  • I totally don't blame the parents.  It was 13 hours of peace for them.  You're never going to see these people ever again.  Who cares what they think of you or the way your kid acts?  At least they didn't have to deal with him for 13 hours and they knew he would be safe because it isn't like he could jump off the plane or anything.

If an adult was acting like this, they would have restrained him and had the police waiting for the plane to land.

If they start having the police waiting for the parents, maybe we'll stop seeing parents just "peace out".

But children aren't adults they shouldn't be held to the same standard.

PS I was totally kidding with my original post.

  • I apparently missed that last post.  I was all ready to be defensive of the behavior of a baby or toddler because I've had one of those flights where my toddler screamed the entire (mercifully short) flight and was inconsolable, but 10 years old is frickin' ridiculous.  Here's a flameful post, if that were my kid and I really honestly couldn't control him (which his parents should at least have tried to do), I'd have been consulting his doctor for some valium or something to chill his azz out.
  • 1. I would absolutely blame the parents in that case - a 10 year is old enough to behave himself - it's despicable that they just let him act like a terror

    2. THAT is what drives me nuts - if the parents at least TRY to control their child and calm them down and keep them quiet that's enough for me - even if the baby cries for 14 hours I'm ok as long as the parents are trying and not just ignoring the behaviour

  • I get annoyed enough when I'm sitting next to someone playing on their phone or ipad or whatever with the sound on - I truly cannot imagine my reaction to a MUSICAL INSTRUMENT. that is insane.
