Marseilles?

Anyone have any Marseilles recos? We're heading down there next weekend and all I know is that I want to see the Calanques and eat some bouillabaise. I still have to book a hotel, figure out if it's beach weather and generally figure out what else we should see/do there besides spend time outdoors if the weather is nice. (It has been raining non-stop in Paris for almost 2 weeks.)

Re: Marseilles?

  • I don't know how set you are on Marseilles, but I would go somewhere else if the flexibility is there.  You could easily stay in Aix-en-Provence (beautiful!) and do a day trip to Marseilles (I lived in Aix, so I know it's very doable).  If your looking for beach I would do Nice over Marseilles.

We chose Marseilles mainly because the high-speed train goes there from Paris and cuts down on travel time with a small child. But, I will look into connections to Aix. Is it doable without a car? We're not planning on renting one.

  • Def....I didn't have a car...I don't remember how long it was for sure, but I want to say less than an hour each way by train.  The train station in Aix is in town and easy to walk to, so that wouldn't be an issue and Aix is a very walkable town (it also has a bus system if you need it).  I just found Marseilles to be rather dirty and not much to see......I don't know what your hoping to get out of the trip though.

  • We did a quick pass through last year (2days), and I'd agree w/ PP, Marseilles is kind of gritty and, IMO, miss-able.  If Nice is doable, I think it's a much better option-- more to see and do.

That said, the harbor is pretty and I also enjoyed Notre Dame de La Garde (I'm guessing you probably have access to plenty of churches in Paris, but still, it is a lovely view above the harbor).

As I said, we were just doing a quick pass through, so hotel priorities were parking and pet-friendly.  Stayed at a Holiday Inn Express-- it was, as you'd expect, tourist-class fine.  Neat, clean convenient, but nothing particularly special/charming (I mean it's a Holiday Inn :)).  I'd recommend it as a 'base camp' kind of hotel for sure.  If you're looking for a more relaxing/spa type experience, not so much.

  • VABeach strikes again! I need to just send you the whole list of everywhere we plan to travel in the next six months so you can provide your insight. :)

Anyway, I will look into connections to Aix tonight.

  • Marseilles is gross.

Take the train to Aix for a couple days, it's a beautiful city, so is Avignon but it's bit further out.

  • I didn't like Marseilles either. The church on the hill was nice, but that's all I really liked. We were there as a stop on a Med cruise, and we were glad to see it, but glad to leave as well.
