I'm looking into finally getting a kindle. Which one do you recommend and why? I don't need anything fancy. I have a smart phone but the kindle app is too small and really strains my eyes. Is the kindle also hard on the eyes or does the e-ink screen help with that?
Thanks!

Re: NFBR: Kindle
I love my Kindle. I have the Kindle 3g w/keyboard. I really only wanted it for reading and like the e-ink screen rather than a backlit screen. I can take in anywhere to read, even on the beach or at the pool. Very lightweight also.

Ditto this! To me part of the major appeal of the kindle is that it won't strain your eyes as much because the screen isn't backlit!
Honestly I don't really use the keyboard.
I use my kindle to read books and that's it. It's perfect for that. If you want color then get one with color... mine doesn't have color and I've honestly never missed it.
I got a wifi only Kindle 3 (Kindle Keyboard), no ads, for Christmas & love love love it even though I don't think I've ever actually used the keyboard. I seriously never have to charge it, and I love how lightweight it is.
When I was shopping, I decided the kindle fire was too heavy & I didn't want to read on a glossy screen. The responsiveness on the Kindle touch was too slow and drove me crazy, plus ironically the new keyboard-free layout seemed too small / didn't sit as comfortably in one hand.
Sometimes I'll play a word game and use the keyboard, but I use Kindle 90% for reading.
i use the keyboard when i'm searching through the kindle store to find books to download or naming collections.
We have two Kindles (slightly older - wifi, no 3G - so I can download books over Whispernet anywhere I can get a wifi connection instead of having to plug in which has been perfect).
We also have a Fire. We also have an iPad. And I find the Fire too heavy and glare-y to read on, and prefer the iPad for movies and color-necessary things. So, I wouldn't buy a Fire again.
I have the older second generation kindle, which is like the current keyboard model. I love it. At the time, I debated between it and the ipad and decided with a smartphone and a laptop the ipad wasn't really that necessary. I feel the same way about the kindle fire now. If I was shopping for a kindle now, I'd just get the cheap $79 one, which I think is such an awesome price. So small and lightweight, and easy to read outdoors. I really do prefer the e-ink to the glassy screens.
The keyboard is really not necessary. You use it for looking up book titles. And when you are reading you can also use it to add notes. But I really never do. It doesn't bother me that it's there on mine, but like I said, if I was shopping for one now, I wouldn't pay $40 extra to get the keyboard.
