I'm the only American so I want to represent.
The kids are ages 3-6. I'm definitely going to mention that the U.S. is made up of all races and cultures and bring in some pictures. DD wants me to make pancakes and syrup as "American food". And I was thinking of playing Freeze Dance with different types of American music (pop, jazz, rock, blues, soul, countryl).
Anything else I should remember to mention? Also the kids usually get a little thing to take home like a coloring page or little favor. Any ideas on what that should be? I was thinking of maybe making every kid a short CD of the freeze dance music? - I know there is copyright involved in that but still.....
ETA: The copyright force is strong here so the CD is probably not a good idea. Any other ideas?
Re: Intl' Day at DD's school -what should I say about the U.S.?
Little American flags to color in would be a nice favor.:)
You could make silver dollar sized pancakes. Those will go a long way with a bunch of small fry kids.:)
I think pancakes are German in origin.:) We borrowed everything from our immigrants.:)
I'd say corn dogs and s'mores to represent American food
. Or here are a few other ideas.

Or maybe you could bring foods that originated in the "new world" like corn or potatoes.
I thought about pancakes originating in Germany, but the American ones are thicker and taste different. And have syrup.
I actually wanted to do Mexican since Mexican svcks here, lol!
S'mores are impossible because there are no graham crackers here. I've never had a corn dog
I'll check out the link, thanks!
right, we make everything better
i like the emphasis on the multi-cultural/multi-racial aspect of the U.S.
what about the bill of rights? maybe focusing on the first amendment?
::two thumbs way, way up:: Side note - when I visited Germany, the students who were planning to come to Denver later in the year were discussing renting a car and starting in San Fransisco, going through Yosemite and ending in Denver, maybe including a quick trip to New York on the weekend. We were like...um, yeah, no.
I LOVE the freeze dance idea with different kinds of American music. Music says so much about a culture and gives a beautiful slideshow of how A led to B, which was followed by C which, when combined with A, led to..... **removes music dork glasses now**
I agree that you should cover the 1st Amendment since those are, in a nutshell, the very freedoms that define us and differentiate us from so many around the world.
As far as food goes, all the new arrivals to the US that I deal with (mostly from SE Asia), want a cheeseburger and french fries. They usually don't like it, but that's what they want to try first for "American" food. You're welcome, world. You're welcome.
Good idea, and doesn't need to be kept warm the way pancakes would, and not as sticky as syrup.
The first time I had a burger in the US I couldn't get over how it tasted exactly like McDonalds (normally, only McDonalds tastes like McDonalds). I've come to the conclusion it's the raw onions (because five guys taste like non-McDonalds), but it spun me out at the time.
Don't know where you live, but here nobody knows anything about baseball, and being a fan, my husband likes to tell his students about it. And I agree with the hamburger and fries thing. That's what pops into mind when I hear American food
maybe you could have a coloring page for a famous landmark, like the statue of liberty, whitehouse, mt. Rushmore etc.
