Switzerland - work permits?
Hi all - I am looking at applying for a position in Switzerland, for an American company. In their listing, it states: "Please note that due to strict Swiss work permit laws, priority will be given to applicants who do not intend to move with spouses, partners or children".
If my husband would be able to continue with his american company would that be allowed? Would he still need a Swiss work permit?
Thanks!
Re: Switzerland - work permits?
I'm a little confused as to what you're asking. Do you want to know if you can apply for the job as a single person and have your H tag along on his own? If that's the case the answer is no.
It's not an issue of being able to work there, it's an issue of being able to live there. In your situation the two would be tied to one another. If your H wants to move he's going to need a residency permit, period. He would get this through you if you got the job.
When are you applying? The deal with Swiss residency permits through an employer is that the trailing spouse gets one (with a work permit attached) too. There are only a set number of them a year, and once they're gone they're gone and the company needs to wait until the next year to apply again. It might be getting a bit late in the year and the company is worried about the number of visas they can get approved by the canton.
I guess I'm asking if since he could still work for his American company if there was some way I could get the preference that a single person would get. I assumed that maybe he wouldn't be needing a Swiss work permit if still working "from home" for his American company?
I was going to apply this coming week - the posting says they would like the position filled Aug 1.
It isn't the work permit for him that's the issue, he needs a permit to live there, which would come through you, through this company you are looking at. He can't move there without the proper permits to live, let alone work
Yeah, if his visa wasn't tied to yours the work permit wouldn't even get to be an issue because he wouldn't have the right to live in Switzerland.
Also, the process for getting residence and work permits for a family when you want to employ one person isn't much different from the process for getting a residence and work permit for a single person. It's just a matter of filing an extra couple of papers. It does cost more though, and for that reason there are certain companies (I have an inkling as to which one you're talking about) favor single people over married ones and blame it on immigration law.
