Any Speech Therapists?

I'm thinking about making a huge career change, and I'm exploring becoming a speech therapist. I'm still just thinking things out, so any information you can give me would be great. Do you like it? What is the job market like in your area? How hard/ easy was the degree? How long did the masters take you? Pros and cons? Ideally, I would like to work in a school. Thanks!

Re: Any Speech Therapists?

  • Our school district is ALWAYS looking for SLP's! They love to interview, but end up taking a job elsewhere for better money. :(    The pay rate is the same as the teachers, plus a professional bonus, and you get all the same benefits as the teachers (pension, good insurance, only work 180 days, room to grow if you want to become a director).

YMMV depending on the school district though.

  • I am an ASHA certified speech language pathologist. The job market is booming and I am always getting calls for jobs which is great!

The graduate school programs are tough and do take awhile, but they are definitely worth it; especially in a slow economy. It can be somewhat difficult to get into the programs. I found that many of the students who make it into the program have letters of recommendation from other speech language pathologists.

The actual job itself can be pretty stressful between meetings, paperwork and dealing with clients, staff, and families. It does keep your mind active during the work day and you typically get a lot of kudos from grateful family when you make noticeable changes with your clients.

If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me.

  • Thanks ladies!  My son has been receiving speech therapy for the past 2 years, so I've seen first hand how amazing a good speech therapist can be in a child's life.

I'm hoping to be able to shadow some speech therapists in the local public school district to get a better feel for the work.
