I've never had one before, but now that I'm winding up my 6th semester in grad school, my skin's starting to look like hell. I want to get one as a reward for finishing finals on Saturday. My skin's just about the worst I've ever seen it - uneven tone and texture, zits (and I never get zits), fine lines everywhere, and super dark undereye circles (I expect sleep will fix this last one more than anything else). I take great care of my skin normally, but my usual routine just can't keep up with the stress of the end of this semester.
What sort of procedure should I look for? What should I ask the esthetician? Anything to avoid? Thanks for any info.
Re: Can someone tell me about facials?
I usually go for the simplest facial available.. I am cheap like that. But I go monthly and it has made a world of difference.
I have had the same issues as you describe. Make sure you are doing all the obvious.. washing your pillow/sheets regulary, disinfecting your phone, not touching your face.
As far as a facial, I go for anything that exfoliates the skin and takes off the first layer and starts off new. Maybe consider a chemical peel. THose have personally helped me more than facials. I make sure to have her do extractions to the annoying pimples that just wont go away. She will know which ones to extract and which ones to leave alone.
I went to sephora and asked for the most mild salicilic acid products. Theres ones by DDF and it is awesome. The name escapes me right now but I can get it to you if you want. Make sure not to overload your face with too many acids and acne products without lots of moisturizer. My face was overloaded and then started breaking out to compensate itself for moisture. Not highly recommended.
Or if all else fails.. go to your derm. GL!
I love facials. They are so relaxing. For me, the best part is the extractions where they get all the blackheads out. That part pinches a little, but makes my skin look so much better. They will also use steam on your face, which will help clear out your skin.
Honestly, I've never asked many questions or looked for anything specific in a facial. I just pick a reputable place, and then talk to the esthetician at the beginning so she can determine the products to use. My face is super sensitive to products, so I let her know that anything with much scent needs to be avoided. This makes me want to get a facial as I haven't had one in forever. My skin is always so nice and moisturized after.
I'm an esthetician, so I can answer any question you have. Here's some basics:
- a basic facial will be good IF you go regularly, but if you need something more potent don't do the 30 min version on the menu
- definitely go to a reputable spa
- a chemical peel will use an acid to remove the top layer or two of skin. You will experience quite a bit of redness over a couple of days.
- microdermabrasion will use a machine that has diamond tips and suction to remove dead skin. If the technician uses too strong of suction you will get irritated and you may experience some redness following the treatment
