Any advice on the most effective way to get rid of mice

Sorry for the animal lovers, but I can't have them building homes near the doors we use to go in and out.  There will be no mice up in my house.

Can anyone give any advice on what to do? Most effective traps, etc?

TIA

  • call an exterminator. we tried to handle our mouse problem ourselves a few years ago and then ended up with a snake IN our house (in one of the bedrooms!).
  • How many do you think you have?  If it's only a couple, try to plug all holes and cracks they might be getting in and just set up the old fashioned traps.
  • Move

Actually, H says to plug the holes and cracks where they are getting in with steel wool.

  • Get a cat.  Mine just presented me with a dead baby mouse...

We have periodically had field mice get in the house, usually in the fall when the weather gets colder.  We haven't been able to figure out the entry points but we haven't seen any (live) mice since we got our two beasts.  We didn't have any luck at all with traps - neither the snap traps, the trap and release traps or sticky traps.  Poison seemed to work a little better in that the poison disappeared and it seemed the mice may have also, but then we had to worry where the mice were going to die, or if they really had!

    Or try this. http://www.amazon.com/Agri-Zap-RZCOO1-Zapper-Classic/dp/B002665ZTC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335768436&sr=8-1

I'm getting the ultra version to use outdoors for rats, because we've had rats under our deck and in our (detached!) garage.   I'm waiting for it to be delivered but it gets great reviews on Amazon.  Because they're outdoors, they've been really hard to get rid of.  They go away for a while and then come back.  Our deck is very low to the ground and we're going to get rid of it completely to give them one less place to nest and hide, but in the meantime I really look forward to electocuting some rats.  Sick, but true.

  • They're not in the house as of yet, they are just in the garden, but they run around the doors when DD and her friends, or even when our friends go in and out.   We have no holes anywhere inside (German engineering LOL) so they wouldn't really be able to set up camp anywhere inside, I just don't want them running around inside agitated looking for a way back out.   They do have holes out in the garden though.

I would LOVE to get a cat anyways but my H is allergic.

Definitely skip the cat, then. Outdoor cats are a huge problem.

It's also a stereotype that cats are mousers (some are, most aren't -- our local shelters and rescue groups will not adopt out domestic cats as mousers, though they will adopt out ferals as barn cats). But having a cat hunt for wild mice opens them up to contracting diseases.
