Vacation spots: Charleston, SC or Savannah, GA?

So I am attempting to plan our post deployment vacation and am narrowed down to 2 options: Charleston or Savannah?

I know there are some MN experts on both places, so I figured I would ask people who would know. I've been googling a bunch, but it's hard to decide!

Where are the best areas to stay? Must sees?

Thanks!

Re: Vacation spots: Charleston, SC or Savannah, GA?

  • Savannah! Tx will have more info but she's camping with the kiddos.

My Favs: crab shack, one eyed Lizzie's, the shrimp factory, Atlantis inn(that's where we stayed). Drive down Abercorn and look at all the old buildings. Do a carriage ride. The westin on the river has a super nice spa. I'll post more later(I'm at work)

  • I love Savannah, I'll be there post H deployment too. What month are you going? That determines my answer.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • We'll be on vacation in June. H is letting me decide and I'm overwhelmed!

That's when I'll be there. Wherever you decide to go, get coast close. I weep thinking of all the bug spray I'll need.

  • I'm team Charleston, obviously. I'll post more about all the fun stuff tonight when I'm not on my phone.

  • I forgot to post good stuff about Sav. Lol. Tybee is lovely. River Street is fun. We're planning on going on a haunted tour, those are pretty popular.

  • Ohh that's tough. I love both areas. H and I go to Savannah more because we're only 45 minutes from there as opposed to the hour and 10 minutish drive to Charleston.

Both towns have a lot of history and sight seeing to do. Charleston and Savannah both offer walking tours, carriage tours and the like. Savannah offers a haunted walking pub tour which I want to do. Tybee Island is beautiful and has a nice beach.

What do you guys like to do? That will help determine my answer.

  • I look forward to your thoughts, VC!

We're easy to entertain. We like to sight see, wander about, relax at the pool/beach, and we'll probably go out bar hopping at night.

  • Savannah!!!   I'm a bit biased since I grew up here, but I prefer it over Charleston.  Savannah has a larger Historic District.  We also have a ton of amazing restaurants.  Many of Charleston's best reviewed restaurants are $30+ per person and have restaurants similar here for less than $20.  The overall cost of the vacation is a bit cheaper with similar hotels and expiriences.

Some things to do here:  Ft Pulaski, Old Ft Jackson, kayak tours to uninhabited islands, dolphin tours, dozens of museums and historical homes, walking tours, trolley tours, ghost tours (the haunted pub crawl is my favorite), movies in the park, beautiful historic cemeteries, River Street and so many other things.

Some of my favorite places to eat are: SOL, One Eyed Lizzie's, Vinnie van GoGo's, Cha Bella, The Crab Shack (Tybee Island), Sundae Cafe (Tybee), Sting Ray's (Tybee), elle, jazz'd, and Churchill's Pub.

If you have any questions about anything here, please let me know.  I don't mind.

I need to write all these down so I can tell my H places we need to go haha. We've gone to Churchill's and loved it (that was also from your recommendation).

I sooo want to do the haunted pub crawl. Just need to get some friends to do it with us.

Give me at least a week's notice and I would be more than happy to go.  It's a blast.

  • TX, what hotels would you recommend? I was looking online at a couple options, but wasn't sure if I should focus on the Historic District or elsewhere.

To piggy back off this, did they ever re-open Atlantis Inn?

I would stay in the Historic District because there is so much there with in walking distance.  Nearly anything north of Liberty, south of Bay, east of MLK and west of Abercorn will be fine.  I usually recommend the Planter's Inn, the Double Tree, The Inn and Ellis Square, The Four Points, Stay Bridge Suites, The Holiday Inn Express and the Mulberry Inn.

Definitely. A GTG would be fun anyway!

They sure did.  It's really nice now and every room has a different theme.  It's really cute.  There is also a coffee shop down stairs.

I stayed at the Doubletree with mr man for our first year anniversary. It was really nice. We walked along river street and spent the afternoon at an Irish pub two blocks behind the hotel.

  • If in Sav, look at the B&Bs. Many offer a pretty sweet military discount/room upgrade option.

Charleston and Sav are two hours apart and both are pretty small. It would be quite easy to do both if you're in the area for a long weekend.
