WW vs myfitnesspal

I'm looking to use a program; whether it be Weight Watchers (online) or the myfitnesspal app to track & lose. I need to lose approx 14lbs to not be considered overweight by BMI (5'4 & 165lbs).

I've toyed around with both programs & am not sure which approach would work better. Points vs calories. I'm semi-active now running 3-4mi 3x week but work 24 hour shift that wreck havoc on sleep & day to day life. I start training tomorrow for my 1st HM.

Which method has been successful for others? Does one work better if I'm starting to run/lift a ton more?

Re: WW vs myfitnesspal

  • I was successful on the old WW, but not the new. That being said, looking back, I find it weird to give everything a point value, rather than just the calorie value. I now track (though I've been lazy since I found out I was pregnant) on spark people and prefer that.

  • I LOVE My Fitness pal. With points you get some weekly allowances that you don't get with MyFitPal, it's just a daily calorie goal and that's it. But I love its simplicity. It helped me lose 10 lbs last year and I'm using it again for the 5 that have creeped back on. I've been doing it like 2 weeks and I've lost 2-3 lbs so far.

This. I started using MyFitnessPal in January and have since lost 10 lbs. It has a community (just like here) where you can post questions about your calories, weight loss, etc., and i have found it very supportive and conducive for weight loss! I thought about doing WW as well, but figured I'd try MFP first since its free. Guess what- it works! :)

ETA: Sounds like you are already familiar with the basics of getting in shape so I am assuming you have a basic familiarity with nutrition as well. I think WW is more for people who don't have as much knowledge/experience in that realm, thus a point system works for them. For me- I've always been aware of calories and good fats, proteins, carbs, etc... so the MFP calorie system is better for me. I feel if I'm given a point system, I have no true idea of the nutrients I am getting.
