Can someone tell me about massages?

I've never had one and I don't know what to expect.

Will I be all greasy afterwards? What are the parameters around establishing 'no touch' zones....as in, "keep your paws off my arse."

My H got me a massage and facial groupon and is stopping by the place before I go to make sure the employees are recently released inmates from a Turkish prison.

Anything else to be aware of before I go? I want to know what to expect so I can relax.

Thanks for helping a lurker :)

I hope you mean "are not released from ..."!!

Most places if not all, make you fill out a form and you check mark areas you do not want to be touched, you can emphazise when you have a few minutes before your session, during the consultation with your therapist that you do not want to be touched at areas .....

Depedning on the spa, some do have a shower facility and some don't. If it's just a massage place, most probably they don't have showers. You can either pack some wet towelettes with you and wipe off the lotion or aske them to give you a wet/warm towel at the end to wipe off the oil.

If it makes you more comfortable, you can always ask for a female therapist.

Just relax and enjoy your massage!!

If you are thinking about continuing to buy groupons for massages it's best to check the review before you buy the groupon.

  • YES you can and should give them parameters.

you can def ask for a specific gender if you feel more comfortable. They should work too close to the genitals but If you don't want glutes touched just say. rarely will they go all in unless its a therapeutic sports specific thing.

are you ok w/ touching in general? Massage for relaxation does give all sorts of health benefits but if you are nervous the whole time what's the point. some places have showers so I would plan to take a good shower and a nap after if you have time. Drink tons of water to help the detoxification.

  • Ive had massages before and usually they don't just go for a "personal" area. If its a full body massage they will go for your legs obviously but if you are not comfortable enough with that you can ask them just to focus on your back, neck, head, arms, etc.. Once I did have a full body massage and the person asked me if he could massage my upper personal area and of course its up to you if its ok, but for me it is uncomfortable. He respected that and it was not an issue. He said the reason for asking was that there are pressure points around that area, but Id rather that area not be touched. So when you first go in I suggest asking what areas will be massaged and if you hear something that will make you uncomfortable then let them know what your comfort zone/boundaries are. Hope this helps!
  • I have never been asked to fill out a form at any spa.

I have been verbally asked about allergies, problem areas, previous injuries, sensitivities, etc.

If they are doing something that hurts, stop it immediately and speak up.  It should be "hard" but not painful.

You will be oily but you can towel off or many spas have shower facilities.

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • Yes, make sure they are NOT recently released inmates.

This is our first experience with Groupon. I will be more careful next time.

Good to know about feeling pressure, but not pain.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate it.
