Garden question: pests

There are ants all up in my tomatoes and peppers, yo. All up in them. And they turned one of my planter boxes into an ant farm. Did I mention I hate ants? HATE. Everytime I see one of those suckers I can feel them crawling on me for days afterwards.

How do I murder these little bastards without ruining my crop? If that's not possible, tell me how to murder these little bastards in such a way that I never see them again.

Re: Garden question: pests

  • I put poison down for fire ants, sugar ants I generally leave alone, but I've never had them destroy any actual veggies.
  • I use water mixed with a teeny bit of dishwashing liquid for spider mites but I don't know if it works on ants.

Homemade pepper spray? (water and cayenne)

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • They ate a bunch of my tomatoes last year. I hate them.

  • Anyone know how to grow lettuce without aphids? I fail every time due to those nasty little things.
  • If you can see their nests you can poor boiling water on it. This also works for weeds you can't pull. This is also a great way to relieve stress - boiling your problems alive ;)

Supposedly you can also sprinkle cornmeal around and they will eat it and it swells up in their gut and kills them.

  • Inside baby powder is the best solution I have ever found for ants.  Outside draw a thick line with chalk the ants will not crawl past the line.  I have also used the ant traps outdoors and they work pretty well.
  • Diatomaceous earth it is! I think I'll try the cinnamon or baby powder thing inside, provided it won't harm my cats.

    Thank you!

Plant Nasturtium around the lettuce. Also, get some lady bugs. They eat aphids. I always plant Marigolds in my raised beds. I don't know if they impact aphids or not, but generally I don't seem to have a problem with aphids on my lettuce. Also, spray your lettuce and the undersides of the leaves with water. It will knock the aphids off the plant. I tend to do this frequently with my plants.

Aphids seem to love my dayum Crape Myrtle tree. Every other afternoon I have to blast the dayum things off the tree. I hate Aphids with the passion of 10,000 red hot burning suns.

  • Sparrow - Here's a list of companion plants for pests. I was at lunch with a work colleague today and she told me that she plants basil and marigolds to help keep pests away too.

  • Dunno if you happen to be growing artichokes but those attract aphids and ants like a mofo. I ripped mine out some after I bought/planted it because of the hot mess they made over it!

  • Diatomaceous earth.  Make a circle around the base of your plants (or any leaves that are touching the ground), or planting bed, or whatever you can.  Reapply after rain.
