C25K- Motivational tips? And when do you run?

I am going to (finally) get my butt in gear and start the C25K program- simultaneously with the Clean Eating challenge on here. I am really excited!

I have tried the C25K before and have always just quit (big fail, I know). I think I get too ambitious and run at too fast of a pace, and then I can never make it through the 1st mile and quit.

Any motivational tips out there, or any tips in starting the C25K? I've always hated running (enjoyed group sports like soccer, lacrosse, etc)- I find it so boring, but like the flexibility and being able to just run out the door.

Also, when do you find is the best time to run? For me, since the warmer months are coming (aka. humidity) and after work I am so tired, I am thinking of waking up earlier and running before work (but it'd be pretty dark now, but will get lighter as summer comes in...)

Re: C25K- Motivational tips? And when do you run?

  • If you don't like running don't do it!  Find something you enjoy doing, why waste your time with a form of exercise you don't enjoy.  We can't motivate you to run, you have to look within and figure out what you want to do.
  • I run before work, which means getting up at 4:30 or 5, depending on what my plans are. Not going to lie, it really sucks at first, but you get used to it and it becomes part of your routine and then it doesn't suck quite as bad. I feel like I have more energy on the days that I run, too. Good luck!

  • If you don't like running, don't run. That said, C25K is a good way to start a *smart* running plan that eases you into it. I run when I can... sometimes that's before breakfast; other times it's after DS is in bed. As a SAHM with a jogging stroller, a great running group, and a treadmill, I have loads of possibilities.

I guess I should clarify- I hate running on the treadmill. I figure running outside, where the scenery is changing, will hoepfully be more enjoyable. Also, I always felt like I didn't give running a chance, but I think if I slow down my pace, I will be better able to complete the program. I want to give it a solid chance before I write off that I hate running.

  • Make sure that you run much slower than you think you need to. It sounds like you know that part already.

I prefer to run in the morning because there is much more assurance that I will actually do it in the morning. It is pretty rare for early AM plans to sneak up on me, but it is fairly common to have something come up in the evening that prevents me from running.

You really don't have to get up that much earlier to fit in C25K. I make sure that I have everything ready to go the night before. I like to put my running clothes for the next day, my headphones, (filled) water bottle, etc. on my bathroom counter and my shoes nearby, that way it is staring at me when I get up to use the bathroom and brush my teeth in the morning. It also allows me to get dressed in light without waking my H up. As long as I have everything layed out like that, I could get up 45 minutes early to squeeze in C25K.

    Good luck!

  • You are setting yourself up to fail by relying on an activity that you do not enjoy for exercise.  It's okay not to enjoy running.  I don't, particularly.  About once a year, I decide to give it a whirl again.  Each time, I train up to where I can a 5K without too much trouble, but by then I'm just bored and have no desire to train beyond that.

Running's just not my bag, but I love rollerblading, zumba, yoga, cycling, kayaking, hiking, RIPPED classes, swimming, tennis, etc., etc.  With so many other fun activities to choose from, I see no reason at all to force myself to do the ones I don't care for.  So I guess my best advice re: motivation would be to find something you actually enjoy doing, and go from there.  Good luck!

This exactly. Why would you force yourself to do something you hate? Life is too short. Find another exercise you like.

  • It's awesome you are trying it.  I never liked running until I did C25K and realized I could run.  Then I realized I felt awesome afterwards and it trumped the way I felt after Zumba or Taebo.  Then I ran a race and fell in love with running even more.  You never know until you try, right?

Find awesome music to listen to but also try running sometimes without music so you can just listen to yourself.  It's awesome running and hearing your body work.

Run slow and then tell yourself to slow down even more. Best advice I ever got.

For C25K, I ran whenever I felt like running.  The biggest motivation was paying for a race before I started.  I was stuck then so I knew I had to take it seriously and just do it.  If I hadn't paid for a race, I would've slacked.

Also, the times my legs burn and I want to quit, I think about people who have no use of their legs and remind myself my legs are burning because I have legs that work.  It makes me push through.

This is great advise! About four years ago I started with the C25K program. I think I started and stopped at least 4 times before I stuck with running. Running is hard, mentally and physically! I think my best advise is to find a running buddy. Its great to have someone to keep you accountable and motivate you during the run.

I also HATE running on the treadmill! I can run 5 miles outside and its enjoyable. I can barely make it a mile on the treadmill before I change machines. Make yourself a running playlist and run your neighborhood!

    Good luck!

Edit: I run at night. I'm not a morning person at all and don't enjoy rolling out of bed to run in the rain. I typically run a couple hours after dinner 7-9 pm. Sometimes in the summer its even later. I have flashing lights I wear on my back and on the dogs leash. We live in a pretty quite neighborhood and I've never felt threatened.

  • I run after the kids go to bed, so 7:45-8:00ish. It's easier for me- I hate getting up & it only takes a half hour or so. My advice? Make sure you get fit for shoes, and go SLOW. Like way slower than you think you should/can. Take it from me... I ended up w/ knee bursitis after week 2!

  • I hated running. But I never gave it a fair chance. I got fitted for proper running shoes and am on week 8 of the c25k. I go first thing in the morning, usually at 6 a.m., but thinking I'll have to go at 5:30 because the humidity is getting bad already.

I run very slow and am trying to pick up the pace, but for the first few weeks you need to just jog and go slow. Take your time. I swore I hated running, and now I actually don't want to do any other workouts I like it that much! lol.

  • Thanks everyone- I think this is what I need to do. The advice I?m reading on here (and other previous threads) is to run slow and then run a bit slower than that. I want to see if I can stick to it, and I want to give it a good try. I am a morning person, and am hoping that I can start in the morning and will try it that way.

Does anyone ever repeat a week in C25K? How do you know when you should repeat or move forward to the next week?

Which week was the hardest for you?

Definitely run slower than you even think you *should*! It's hard to go that slow, but do it!!

It's fine to repeat a week!! Lots of people do- I myself made it through week 3, then had knee problems (from bad shoes & going too fast!). I stopped completely for a week.

I started back up by repeating week 2. I'd say if you're REALLY struggling with a week, repeat it!! GL!

I was able to run straight through.  A couple of times, it was just a bad day so I would take a short (30 sec) walk break.  Since I was running by time, I would make sure I got the time in for the run so those days my workout would just be extended for the walk break.

My hardest was the week of the 20 mile run.  Such a huge difference in non-stop running.  Gah.  It was all mental because my body was trained to run it but my head didn't think I could.   I did it and it really gave me the boost I needed.
