Grrr - this is why I hate regular nail polish
I've had shellac on my nails for over two years and really love it, but decided to start doing my own nails to save money. I had the shellac taken off yesterday and got a regular manicure, having them use a new bottle of China Glaze nail polish I just bought.
Well, about 30 hours later, I already have a chip. WTF. And because I'm OCD, I had to put a clear coat on it so it won't chip more or it would bug the crap out of me. Which means I'll have a goofy pattern on my nail from my sheets in the morning. And I'll probably notice more chips.
We'll see how long this regular nail polish thing lasts, because I'm already missing my shellac.
Re: Grrr - this is why I hate regular nail polish
It's probably not a "chip" but more likely the edge of your nail breaking off due to being damaged by the shellac. I do my own nails, and I always do a coat of Nailtiques formula 2, then Zoya Anchor as a base coat, then 2 coats of Zoya (or OPI) polish. My nails look fabulous for at least 4-5 days, but look decent for almost 2 weeks.
I highly reccomend the Nailtiques formula 2 to repair your nails, I've used it for years off and on, and love it. It will completely transform your nails within a week of using it.
Get Seche Vite or Poshe to use as a top coat ASAP. SV dries in around 10 minutes and keeps sheet marks from happening. I usually do my nails before bed and give them about 25 minutes before doing anything and never have marks in the morning. I can push it to 10-15 if I really need to get to bed. Orly Bonder works great as a base too.
Also, could your nails be peeling from using the Shellac for so long? I've heard it can be rough on nails. My nails typically peel making it look like chips, but it's actually the nail coming off with the polish on top. You may want to invest in a good strengthener like Nailtiques (best), OPI Nail Envy in the original formula (good especially in chlorine or saltwater), or Orly Nail Defense (works great under a layer of Orly Bonder and keeps it from dying nails orange). Don't be fooled by NailTEK, it's a Nailtiques knockoff and basically just clear polish or go cheap on strenghteners, base, or top coats. You really do get what you pay for on these types of products. You will still save on the long run by getting good products and DIY manis. Don't do a combination base/top coat. They have two totally different functions and never work in 2 in ones since one needs to be rough and sticky while the other needs to be smooth and glossy.
Another trick to touching up without redoing the whole mani is to use crackle or glitter polish over all of your nails with top coat. It hides imperfections and makes them last a little longer. I don't do nail salons, but my manis last 4-5 days before chips with a good strengthener, base, and top coat.
have you tried dipping your nails in ice water after you paint? no lie, it will be dry in 3ish minutes
use a hair dryer to dry quicker?
I usually do a 2nd clear coat the day after I do my nails to prevent chipping...especialy after a salon pedicure.
I paint my own nails, but I will say that it's a total PITA. Lately I've stopped on the fingernails completely and I just do the toes.No matter what I do on my fingers I get 4-5 days MAX without a chip or it wearing down on the tip.
I know you're trying to save money, but what about keeping the shellac going for awhile and just decreasing somewhere else. I did notice that you bought like 8 of the same lip gloss in different colors in your makeup order the order day. There's no way you can use up all that lip gloss, right?
So that's my vote - keep the shellac, go for less makeup purchases.
LOL. Yes, the makeup purchases are being decreased as well!
Thanks for the tips. I'll have to look into these products.
My nails are definitely damaged from the shellac. The surface looks okay (not peeling or rough, but I did only see them briefly before they were polished), but they are very thin.
If I never get the hang of regular polish and really hate it, I think I'll look into at home shellac.
I'm glad that I read this. I was debating trying Shellac, but I do not want my nails to get thin and weak. My natural nails are strong on their own and I don't want to compromise that.
If it were me, I would stop Shellac and try to get my natural nails back to the way they were prior to doing Shellac. I would think that once they are healthy you would be able to try some of the tips you got in this and the other thread you posted and get good results.
Shellac once in a while is ok, like for vacations, etc. But for everyday stick to regular polish.
I'm a lurker, but I can help! If you take the brush from the polish you used and dip it in nail polish remover, you can brush it over the chipped nail and it will thin the rest of the polish out and cover it. I do this, then brush a layer of the nail polish over it. Chip is gone without having to start all the way back at the beginning.

every time i've ever gotten a mani from the nail salon, i get a chip asap. doing it myself, i don't.
also, if you do it yourself with colors you have, when you get chips you can just fill them in. don't think because ONE china glaze color chips right away it means all of that brand will, or that all non-shellac polish will.

My nails are like paper and I had given up on them a long time ago. But 2 weeks ago I got Nailtiques and it's like a miracle. My nails are the hardest and longest they have been in my life! I literally have to file them down. I now want to run out and buy all kinds of polish.
If your nails are brittle right now I'd give it a good 2 - 3 weeks of no polish at all. Then introduce a strengthening polish (sally hansen sells one). Maybe try those nail strips if you really have that much of an issue...Avon sells those too for cheaper. I used those a few years ago when they were first released.
My vote is to give your nails time to heal, then try some fun options - even get a bowl from your cabinet, add some lemon juice and other fun smelly stuff, bubbles and make your own spa manicure at home. I promise it gets easier...
Invest in the Essie 3 Way Glaze..amazing stuff (base and top coat)...stick with lighter applications to avoid the goopy mess.
When I know I'm going to get a mani/pedi I bring my polish and top coat with me. That could help.

i don't usually wear top coat because i change out colors about 3 times a week. and i've taken my own polish every time for a professional mani, and i've never gotten more than 24 hours wear without a chip. i think my nails don't take well to the soaking and filing and such.
i'd rather spend my money on polish than paying someone to put it on for me anyways

i bought gelish polish at sallys and ordered a uv lamp from ebay for about 30 bucks so I just do them myself.
I got the OPI gel polish but I noticed it's super thick. so sometimes I'll do a gel coat then the gel topcoat and put regular polish over it and it will last for 2 weeks.
