Not really H&F related ( but kind of) what does your closet look like?

As in...do you keep things that you don't really wear that much, or that don't fit 100% properly?

Right now mine is kinda jam packed with a TON of clothes. But if I got rid of everything that was too big, or too small, or just fit poorly, made me look sloppy, is waaaaay out of style or I just plain won't wear I might have a handful of things, lol. I am very tempted to go through and try it all on, get rid of everything that is truly too big and set aside all the stuff that is still too small ( I still have 10lbs to lose). I just hate to get rid of stuff because I can't exactly go out and buy a whole new wardrobe...

Re: Not really H&F related ( but kind of) what does your closet look like?

  • After a big weight loss last year, I purged my closet of clothes that were too big.  I was still trying to wear some of the pants as I replenished my wardrobe and then realized how awful they were looking.

Most of my clothes were donated but I kept a few of them 1) as a reminder of how far I've come and 2) potentially as maternity clothes...They are in storage bags in the attic.

Start by getting rid of what's no longer your style and what makes you look sloppy.  If there are things too big that you love, try having them tailored (I'm spoiled in that my mom can do most of the fixes).

  • I've donated clothes as I've lost weight, so my closet is a little empty. I'm down to only three pairs of acceptable work pants! (Thankfully I just bought a couple of dresses.) But I still have some stuff in the back of the closet that needs to be donated. Probably more than 1/2 of my shirts need to be gone...but it will be so sad when I only have like 10 tops left!

I have a small closet (reach-in, not walk-in), but we did Container Store shelving to optimize space. I had 3 shelves and I recently swapped out the bottom shelf and added two drawers so that I can store workout clothes.

My shoe situation is a nightmare. I've found no organization system that works for me, so a pile of chaos it is.

I hadn't thought of tailoring, thats a good idea! Knowing me though I'd set aside stuff to take and forget all about it,lol!

Do you have floor space? I was able to find a shelf type thing that sits on the floor of my closet that I put my shoes on. That way thay aren't jumbled up and they are somewhat out of the way.

  • Since I've been the same size for 10-ish years, it may not matter as much. I purge twice a year with things that I no longer want, might not be in style, don't wear, etc. If they are a name brand, I might try to sell it on ebay. If not, it gets thrown away if in bad shape or donated.
  • I go through my clothes maybe twice a year. Whenever I start running out of space or hangers I usually go through it.

I have some floor space, but not a lot. I have a three-tier rack that has shoes I wear less frequently. In front of that is a giant pile of shoes I wear more often.

It matters! Before I had kids I was always the same size so it's good to have  a referance point because once I lose the rest of this "baby" weight I will still need to keep up with my closet. You know?

You must have a lot of shoes!!

  • I had a bunch of cute tops that i bought while i was still losing the baby weight. Once they started looking frumpy, i didn't want to get rid of them since we knew we were going to have more kids. But I also didn't want to look like a hag and have them take up closet space.

I found that adding some cute belts or layering under/over thigngs gave the clothes a whole new look!

  • I hung on to some of my "skinny" (well, skinnier!) clothes.  Maybe my tastes have changed or my body isn't the same, but some of the stuff looked awful once I could fit into it again!  I started getting rid of so much stuff, esp the stuff that's now too big.  It felt sooo good to get rid of that clutter!  I don't want to spend lots of money for clothes that will be too big in the future so I hit outlet stores, clearance racks, even Goodwill.  I have started paying for good bras though-those are worth every last cent!

  • I saw a great pin about this on Pinterest. It said to hang all of your clothes on hangers facing backward. As you wear things, hang them back up facing the right way. After six months, if something is still on a backward facing hanger, get rid of it.

I have not done this yet, and my closet looks like it's been ransacked. I am 9 weeks PP, and I have some maternity, some bigger non-maternity and some prepregnancy stuff in there. I plan to do this trick after I'm done with my maternity and bigger stuff.

  • I have been PG 3 times in the last 6 years so I had quite a variety of clothes until a few months ago.  We are done w/ babies so I got rid of anything w/ a maternity label, everything that was outdated or not in good condition, and everything that was too big or too small - which left me w/ very few things!!!

I buy new things here and there on an as-needed basis.

  • I purge every 6 months or so, things I haven't worn since the last purge (with the exception of formal cocktail dresses and stuff like that) get donated.  And then I don't feel bad about shopping for more clothes.  :)
  • I used to have a closet like you are describing.  Now that I've been in weight loss mode for a while, I go through my closet once every month or so and try everything on.  I have a lot of things in there that almost fit and I'm just waiting to start wearing them... and then there are things that are getting too big.

It makes no sense to keep all that "filler" in there if you're not wearing it.

I sell all the things I don't fit and won't wear again - I buy/sell on ebay to recoup some cost of constantly buying new clothes.  I hang on to things I really like (just in case my weight loss fails and I go in the other direction someday).
