Newbie here, and I have a question

I just renewed my gym membership (got to lose weight) and will be going at least 3 times a week starting today. My question is about when is the best time to eat. Should I eat my largest meal before the gym and have a snack/protein bar after? Or have a snack/protein bar before and have a small dinner?

Also, if anyone can recommend any great tasting protein bars that would be amazing!

Thank you in advanced!!!

Re: Newbie here, and I have a question

  • It really depends on what time of day you're going, I guess.

I run in the morning on an empty stomach.  I lift/CrossFit after work (5:30) with just a bit of something carby in my belly.  I drink whey protein immediately afterward, and then have dinner.

  • Its totally a personal thing you will have to figure out for yourself.  I can usually eat quite a bit right before I go and be fine, but a lot of people can't eat anything withing 2 hours of working out or they will get/feel sick.

I guess I would start with eating something like a protein bar or greek yogurt an hour or so before you go and see how you feel.  If you find its not enough, try a piece of fruit with some peanut butter or almonds.

Also, it depends on what time you're going to the gym and what time you usually eat dinner.

  • It definitely depends on what time of day and what exercise(s) you're doing. You probably don't want a big meal before a workout though. If you're working out late at night (after normal dinner time), I'd recommend having slightly more food during the day, a small dinner, and then recovery food post-workout (chocolate milk, cereal, fruit, yogurt - some carbs and protein basically). You probably shouldn't have like 800 calories for a late dinner at 9pm then go to sleep right away.
