Running question

Okay, I know this is a common problem and I need to know what to do about it.  Every time I go for a long run (I'm up to 4.5 miles) I am dying by the end because I have to poop!  I never have to go before my run and I always think I'm safe, but no!  It is so aggravating and psychologically corrupting my runs!  But what can I do???

Re: Running question

  • I usually drink a big cup of coffee about 30-45 min before my run (if it's an AM run) which usually "cleans me out" before I head out the door.

  • When I get up in the morning, I drink a big glass of water. And sometimes another. Then 10-20 minutes later, I go to the bathroom. Then I work out.

My plan exactly. Works like a charm, and is my go-to on race day!

Hey GR!  I guess I should have asked you first. =)  Would this help me even if I run in the evenings?  What is it about the water?  Coffee usually does it for me, but again, that is in the mornings.

  • Hi! :)

Is there *any* food-related common denominator on days when it's happened, or when it's been the worst? Through trial and error, I've learned that I can't have dairy milk, eggs, or greasy meat like sausage before a run. If I have an afternoon or evening run planned (pretty much every Tues/Thurs) then I am careful with what I eat leading up to it, and make sure to include my standard pb-on-toast about an hour/hour and a half before. Of course, staying hydrated throughout the day is important, but I notice the "drink and go" works best with H20 in the morning for me.

  • Lots of leafy greens are what does me in before a long run.  (Un)fortunatly we are all different so you just have to figure out what works for you.  I'm sure with  little trial and error you can figure out what is causing your problem.
  • I have the same problem.  I usually run at 5:30am, so getting up earlier to have a cup of coffee and a preemptive doesn't sound like fun to me. The day before I run, I try to drink a lot of water all day long because I've read that it's a hydration issue, but that doesn't seem to help.  If I drink too much water in the morning, it's worse. I've tried going before I run, but it's just not happening until I get moving.

On my run this morning, I was actually thinking about what would be worse, to crap my pants or to squat on the size of a fairly busy road.  Then I thought about what would happen if a cop saw me, and if he/she would arrest me if I explained why I was crapping on the side of the road.  At least it helped the time go by, and circumstances never got so dire that I had to make that decision.

If you really can't get up any earlier, you could always just plan on having to go during you run. Basically run for 10 minutes and end up back at your home, go to the bathroom, then finish your run. I think hydrating extra the day before means you're more likely to have to go the next morning (and possibly during your run if you don't go before). When you're properly hydrated, you're less likely to be constipated and it's easier to go - which is awkward on a run. But I really wouldn't advise cutting your water intake, then you'll just be painfully constipated after your run anyway.
