Do you get emotional at the finish line?

I noticed at the finish of both half marathons I've run that I was almost choked up at the end. Just for a minute and them it passed. I don't know if it was relief at being done or joy in the accomplishment our pride or dehydration, lol. Anyone else or am I alone here?

Re: Do you get emotional at the finish line?

  • All those people cheering at the finish line and accomplishing a goal -- gets me almost every time.

    DD - February 2011
  • I always get choked up at some point during my races. I thought I was weird but its more of a mental/emotional accomplishment for me.  Part of the reason why I love to race is because of the emotions I feel during the race.

I second this--during my half I teared up when I started.  All throughout the race I would get teary eyed. At the end, however, mostly I was just smiling and happy to be done :)

  • Only when my family is there. My 3rd half, my DH and two kids were at the finish line and it took everything I had not to break down and cry 100yds before the finish line.
  • Not for any of my shorter races (5k, 1Ok, half) but I was sobbing immediately after finishing my marathon.  I was so happy to be done, sick (migraine, vomiting), very proud of myself, amazed by my time, and caught up in the whole experience of the crowd, etc.  It was a perfect storm and I was a wreck :)
  • Yes, twice.  My first marathon and when I BQ-ed at my 3rd marathon.  Both ran with my dad too.

    Same here.

At the end, I'm usually all smiles.

  • Not usually, but then again I have never done anything longer than a sprint tri. I am usually focusing on trying not to vomit.

I do, however, tend to get emotional when I'm almost done. Like "omg I CAN do this!"

  • I don't, but I generally don't cry when I'm happy like that. I def don't think it's weird when others do though.

  • I cried when DH finished his first Ironman.  And, I cry at when I watch people finishing Ironman in the last hour or so, but I've never cried for any of my own races.  Hmmm...
  • I usually get choked up at the start of races. I was pretty much sobbing (w/o tears b/c of dehydration, haha) at my first BQ marathon though. My family was all there, and while I knew I would get a BQ time I had no idea I had crushed my goal until I saw the clock at the finish line. It was a crazy feeling. I may have teared up at the finish of my last race, but more because I was sooooo glad I was done.

  • I've never gotten choked up at the finish. if I get choked up, it'll be at the start.
  • Usually not at the finish line, not yet anyways... just wait for my marathon finish - i'll probably cry like baby.

Usually I cry when I see the Leukemia signs - For the life of me I can't think of what that association is called -  There are usually signs of people who've passed... Leukemia & Lymphoma Society ...  ... Those signs always get me all freakin' choked up.

I think she means at the races that benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma society. There's usually a section of the races with pictures & stories. It's called the miracle mile. :)

  • Interesting. Mostly I just feel like I want to puke at the end of races. :)

  • No. I do 20+ races/year. The only tears may be tears of joy that I'm finally done a 3 hour race when it's miserable and raining or 99 degrees out.
  • At my first half, I was so happy I was giddy, followed my nausea followed by tears. I guess the emotions have gotten a little more stable with each race, but there are still moments where I get really choked up.

  • Yes. I have only done two 5ks and a 7k to date, but every time I have gotten emotional at the end. Then again, there was a time when I could barely jog for 20 seconds, so it's kind of a big deal for me.

I think I am going to be a wreck when I finish my first half in June :-)

  • Sometimes, especially if I PR or complete a new distance.

Having a big crowd cheering at the end is totally awesome.  How often do regular people get to have that happen to them?  I think it's pretty cool.

  • I was laughing and crying when I finished my 25K - I seriously couldn't believe I'd done it.

And I cried at mile 12.5 of my half where I set my PR because that when I actually realized I was going to make my goal.

I used to cut out of work early to watch the end of the Boston Marathon.  I can't imagine the feeling of running through Kenmore Sq, and turning to onto Boylston to run into Copley Square.  I would start crying for them!    Plus, everyone was cheering and screaming for anyone who ran by.  I would watch boyfriends and girlfriends and kids go out to finish up with their runner friends.  So touching.  One day, I'll run that marathon.  And I'll mostly likely cry.
  • If I were to ever win a bike race or be competitive in a running race (enough to qualify for one of the big marathons) then maybe I'd get emotional about those.  Thus far, though, I've never gotten emotional at any of the other bike or running races I've ever competed in.
  • I did at my first 5k and also both 1/2 marathons. And at the beginning and middle fo the 1/2s too-lol. It's just so surreal to me in the moment to be THERE, doing this thing that I never thought I could/would do. And I'm a crier, so it's sort of what I do.

  • I just ran my first 10k and at the start of it I was tearing up but  not at the finish line. I don't know if I will my next race - but the 10k was only the second race I've ever done (the first was a 5k about two years ago).
