@ - UGH. Discrimination at work because of being pregnant..

So I'm a real estate agent. Technically self-employed, though I work for a brokerage, legally you are self-employed.

I was working with people the past 4 months (who knew from the start I was pregnant) showing them houses, talking about listing theirs, etc. They called me two weeks ago to tell me they decided to go with a different realtor now that they were ready to list their house because as I approached my due date they weren't sure how I could still help them. I explained that (as always) my partner in the business would simply take over. The marketing, services, everything else was the same. Really, they'd be getting 2 realtors for the price of 1. They were going to think about it. Aside from the pregnancy "issue" (their words), they loved me and there was no other reason they wouldn't hire me.

Well, they went with another (male) realtor. Listed their house on Friday, sold today.

BLAH. I just feel really.....annoyed? Sad? Its not about the $, or the business, though of course both would be nice heading into unpaid mat leave (my business doesn't qualify for the Canadian mat leave) I just feel so disheartened in how my pregnancy was grounds for discrimination, kwim?

I don't entirely blame the clients, I understand their concerns. It just really sucks.

And also, I'm still pregnant. So I most certainly could have sold their house before the baby was an issue.

Vent over :)

  • as a person who is in a client-service based business (and who also had to round up people to help with continuity stuff on pending matters), i wouldn't have expected anyone to hire me on a new matter after about 34 or so weeks.  it's logical, imo.

it's just the shiity end of the biological stick, really.

    kiss it, nest.
  • That sucks. I would be pissed. I wonder if the male Realtor gave them a better deal on commission?

I don't blame the clients per se, I'm more annoyed at the biological reality of it.

They didn't get a discount on commission from the other agent, I checked.

yeah, annoyed makes sense.  i got a little cheesed off when it became clear that some stuff i'd been looking forward to handling was going to get pushed past my due date.  i guess "disheartened" caused my eyebrows to go up.  like you were sad for humanity or something.  usually it takes something like lilo going to the freaking white house correspondent's dinner for me to be sad for humanity.

    kiss it, nest.
  • I'm sorry about the lost sale...but I can't believe you are still pregnant!!

I was sad for humanity that LILO got to go to the White House dinner. Thats BS!!

But no, in this case I'm not sad for humanity. I'm annoyed at losing business because I'm pregnant.

Again, I'm not blaming the clients in this situation. I'm just really annoyed.

  • ugh that sucks!

People walked egg shells around me after about 32 weeks. When I was about due they really avoided me. When I was overdue and someone got close enough to me to ask, they just said "oh...Indifferent" and slowly backed up and walked away. People seem to truly think the baby is gonna shoot out of you at any second.

  • Surely you'll get a referral fee, right? I'm an agent too, and if someone pulled this with me, especially if they went with another agent in my brokerage, I would want a referral fee! What did your broker say?
